Rainiers game thread 5/24

The M’s are off tonight, but the Rainiers are playing Oklahoma City in Tacoma in a few minutes.
Chris Seddon takes the hill for Tacoma, who are coming off a sweep of New Orleans.
Oklahoma City features some of the top arms in Texas’ system, with Tanner Scheppers, Pedro Strop, and Alexi Ogando anchoring the bullpen.

In other MiLB news, Mauricio Robles in AA West Tennessee were rained out, but Erasmo Ramirez had another fine outing for A Clinton, going 6 IP of 5H, 2R, 0BB 5K ball. He wasn’t as heavy on the grounders as usual, but the K:BB ratio is still quite good.
Chris Woodward’s LD ricochets off the 3B but right to the SS who throws him out…
Seddon had a 1-2-3 inning in the first. Jack Hannahan’s up now… and he grounds out to the pitcher. He’s still mired in a real slump.
Brad Nelson’s one of the hottest hitters in the line-up, but I’m looking forward to seeing him in RF today.
Chris Davis and Ryan Garko are both with OKC trying to find their stroke again.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia lines a deep drive that Halman plays quite well for the out. Halman’s bat’s heating up a bit, but he’s coming off a 2 error day in CF.
Greg Halman’s up with Mike Carp aboard. The OKC starter, Mike Ballard, is a lefty with a mid 80s FB. Perfect for Halman…who lines a single the opposite way. Carp goes first to third.
Eliezer Alfoso lines a ball 360′ in the air off the wall, but it’s played well and Alfonso gets a single out of it. 1-0 Rainiers in the 2nd.
Zeke Carrera gets an RBI on a well-executed push-bunt to the 2B. Base hit, RBI, 2-0 Tacoma.
First chance for Brad Nelson in RF…no drama, just a line drive right at him for the out.
Hannahan’s had 2 pop-ups to deal with, but no GBs.
Mitch Moreland lines into a DP to end the 3rd.

Is it just me or would you rather have the Rainers’ lineup over the Mariners?
Tommy Everidge hit a two-run HR that OKC is disputing; it hit an advertising sign above the wall in LF.
Greg Halman fights off a tough change with 2 strikes then grounds out weakly (swinging bunt) but he almost beat it out.
You can see these flashes of true, freakish ability in the guy. Not that a swinging bunt is one of them, but it’s nice to see him fight off tough pitches instead of swinging through them.

I’d probably take this Tacoma line up over certain M’s line-ups, that’s for sure. Not sure I’d sign up for Brad Nelson, MLB RF though.
Amazing catch by Zeke Carrera in foul territory in LF. Snow-cones the ball while jumping on the tarp. Wow.
Single by Chris Davis to RF with a man on2nd, but the runner is held. Respect Brad Nelson’s arm!
I told you. Saltalamacchia lifts a fly ball to RF, and Brad Nelson doubles up the runner at home. Throw was strong, but a bit on the 1B side of home. Alfonso makes a great diving play to tag the runner. Wow.
I’m going to stop making fun of Nelson’s D for a while.
Ryan Garko knocks in OKC’s first run with a double to right.
Seddon in a bit of a jam, with 2 on, 1 out in a 4-1 game. Craig Gentry’s up for Oklahoma.
Pedro’s Strop sounds like the name of a barber shop in the Wild West.
Line drive triple to CF clears ’em, and it’s 4-3. Halman almost made a running catch, but couldn’t.
Seddon escapes after a slow GB to 3B and then a line-drive out to 3b
Ballard out for OKC with 2 on, 2 out in the 5th. Coming in is Zach Phillips, a lefty.
Deep line drive by Carp plates a run. 5-3 Rainiers on the sac fly.
Halman’s first K of the day ends the inning. 1-3, 1K is progress…
Brian Sweeney is on in relief for the Rainiers, one of two guys to play for the team in three separate decades.

Sweeney fans Garko, who has to be wondering what happened to his career. He was a solidly above average bat like a year ago.

In comes Alexi Ogando… first pitch at 96mph.
Ogando and fellow prospect Engel Beltre got in trouble for a marriage scam in the Dominican (they agreed to sham marriages to get other people visas to come to the US) and thus couldn’t play in a US league for several years. He’s here now, and he’s another very good arm in the Texas system.
Tommy Everidge hits a deep double to right CF on a 95 MPH fastball plating two. The Rainiers had a single and an error off Ogando for their two runners.
And fortunately for us, he doesn’t know how to throw to first.

Ooh, one swinging strike for white. Make it two, and that’s the strikeout. Nice, though it doesn’t bode well for Davis’ comeback attempt.
Tanner Scheppers… good to see one of the kids from the Bad News Bears make it as far as triple A.
Great catch of a soft LD in shallow left center by Hannahan. Still no GBs, but he’s looked good at SS.

He’s a Triple-A pitcher, getting outs where he belongs.
One thing drives me crazy @ Rainiers games: The large TV screen never specifies the positions of players. For example, the graphic lists Nelson as “infielder” or Halman as “right field”.
Why can’t they get this small thing right?
Can Everidge play first base? Or maybe a possible DH replacement if we get movement on Griffey?
