Game 97, Mariners at Blue Jays

marc w · July 23, 2016 at 10:12 am · Filed Under Mariners

Hisashi Iwakuma vs. RA Dickey, 10:07am

James Paxton had one of those games that show off his incredible potential and the M’s bullpen made it hold up. Dan Vogelbach homered in his first AB in the M’s system, and doubled in his second. The M’s are in a tough spot in this wildcard race and as an organization in general, but that doesn’t mean everything’s hopeless.

Knuckleball breakfast today. I swear every time I’m hung over the M’s play an east coast early game.

1: Aoki, LF
2: Smith, RF
3: Cano, 2B
4: Cruz, DH
5: Seager, 3B
6: Lind, 1B
7: Martin, CF
8: Iannetta, C
9: O’Malley, SS

So I take it that knuckleball-breakfasts don’t sit well after alcohol? Knucke-sandwiches often go with excessive alcohol and I’m sure those are still worse.

I wish there were more knuckleballers. When they’re on, they make batters look so silly.

    And CRUZ! With the SLAM!

I tuned in just in time for Cruz’s slam. Looks like Dickey isn’t “on” today… good for our side.

Nellie says to hell with the knuckleball-breakfast, and served that sandwich–without alcohol!

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, anyway.

Donaldson denied; served a sandwich by the plate umpire.

Well, it did seem pretty darn obvious that Josh stuck his arm out there. 😀

    Time for another slam!

…Okay, for Nori that’ll do. I don’t think he’s physically capable of hitting a slam.

Nice hit, Adam. Let’s see you hit a few dozen more over the next few weeks, eh?

For July he’s running a wRC+ of 100. Not really what you want from your DH or first baseman… but at least it’s not a big pile of suck.

Kuma got himself out of a jam there! That split-finger can be nasty.

It’s nice to have a game where everything is going the Mariners’ way!

Of course, they’re facing Toronto who can score runs in bunches themselves – so hopefully they don’t let up here.

    SEA-BOSS!!

Nice to see Condor go yard – especially when it doesn’t particularly hurt the M’s.

Saunders and Smoak with 3 homers today. Hilarious.

Smoak is doing a little better with Toronto than he was as a Mariner, but he’s still pretty much the same guy – goes on streaks where he looks like the player everyone has waited for him to be, but mostly just teases a “I’ll walk and hit just well enough to where the team will keep hoping” line.

Given the mashers Toronto has at other spots, it’s kind of surprising they’d settle for a first baseman running a .704 career (and .752 this season) OPS.

I didn’t understand that extension either.

Wow, I just noticed – what’s going on with the Rangers?

I just happened to look at the standings, and was very surprised to see that the Mariners are only 5 out (the Astros are just 2.5 games back). Given that the Mariners haven’t exactly been setting the world on fire, I was wondering how it happened… which is what led me to note the Rangers’ skid. They’re 4-13 so far in July!
