Game 162, Angels at Mariners

marc w · September 28, 2014 at 11:54 am · Filed Under Mariners

King Felix vs. Cory Rasmus, 1:10pm

It is the happiest Felix Day Ever. I don’t need to tell you to watch, and I don’t need to strain for a reason you should care. I have no idea how we got here, but this is incredible. Enjoy this, no matter what.

Cory Rasmus was excellent against the M’s for four IP 10 days ago, but even if he’s great again, he’s not going more than 5. This could be a bullpen battle, and I like our chances if it is.

Go Mariners. Go Rangers.

1: Jackson, CF
2: Ackley, LF
3: Cano, 2B
4: Morales, DH
5: Seager, 3B
6: Morrison, 1B
7: Saunders, RF
8: Zunino, C
9: Taylor, SS

FanGraphs gives Kluber a significant WAR advantage. They’re pretty much dead even in xFIP.

    Both have been workhorses.

  2. Westside guy on September 28th, 2014 3:39 pm

Actually now I don’t understand the WAR difference because I thought FanGraphs’ WAR was mostly based on xFIP?

  3. Jake on September 28th, 2014 3:40 pm

    Medina is sooo slowwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  4. Westside guy on September 28th, 2014 3:41 pm

I really can’t understand why Lloyd likes Medina so much. He’s not awful, but he seems to be the weakest pitcher in the bullpen.

  5. stevemotivateir on September 28th, 2014 3:43 pm

I did notice the WAR difference, but is that considered in the vote?

  6. stevemotivateir on September 28th, 2014 3:44 pm

Medina should be squeezed out by Smith next season, so maybe we see a trade?

  7. Westside guy on September 28th, 2014 3:50 pm

I don’t think most voters can even spell WAR, let alone consider using it for anything.

(Okay I had to get ONE snarky comment in)

  8. stevemotivateir on September 28th, 2014 3:55 pm

It wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t know what the spelling stands for.

  9. Longgeorge1 on September 28th, 2014 3:56 pm

When Felix won his first Cy, they certainly did not go by “old school” numbers.

  10. Longgeorge1 on September 28th, 2014 3:59 pm

The M’s finally kept us interested for a full season

  11. Westside guy on September 28th, 2014 4:00 pm

    True, LG1.

  12. Westside guy on September 28th, 2014 4:01 pm

    Well that’s a wrap.

  13. Westside guy on September 28th, 2014 4:03 pm

So the team is throwing souvenirs to the fans – nice touch.

  14. stevemotivateir on September 28th, 2014 4:04 pm

    Like K’s, IP, and ER’s?

I don’t think the “old school” numbers hurt him much. He was among the top, if not on top, in many categories.

But I do think they look at a lot of things. I just question which ones they take most seriously.

  15. Longgeorge1 on September 28th, 2014 4:11 pm

    Specifically W-L record

  16. MrZDevotee on September 28th, 2014 4:18 pm

    Highlights.
I’m not sure anyone is manning the “new signups” approval. I tried changing to a different login 3 different times during the season, to finally lay to rest the “MrZDevotee” moniker, but no one ever approved any other logins I submitted.

Brought it up in posts too, but nothing ever happened.

Perhaps USSMariner is simply on her last voyage… Not much here other than game threads anymore.

Congrats to the Mariners on a strong season. Hopefully, a stepping stone towards 2015.

I dunno. At the front end, Jeff and especially Marc are reasonably active. And we still sporadically see Jay and even Mike; plus there are the Matthew/Jeff podcasts.

But I am reasonably sure DMZ was the guy who handled the back-end stuff – and I don’t think anyone took on that role after he stepped down. And while there are a few of us here that do have the requisite skills, we don’t have the relationship with the site owners where they are comfortable trusting us.

Pretty much the same record that spurred the Badard trade under Bavasi. I wonder if something similar will happen this off season.

    Westside…thanks for the info.

No new subscriber accounts are getting approved and only pre-existing accounts can post? For how long this has been happening? That’s a clear sign of the siteowners allowing this ship to sink.

So when did DMZ step down? So the question is why the siteowners don’t develop a relationship with someone they can trust?

I’d be willing to tech admin this blog if the siteowners need that kind of assist.

It was an entertaining year. It has been a long time to see decent baseball from this team. Lloyd and his staff did a nice job. It kept me watching nearly every day.

Still, I can’t help but think about the losing streaks, the impotent offense, and that the weird matchups with sub .220 hitters was the difference, although it only game down to a game.

I have little faith in Jack Z, but I hope he adds some offense to the team in the off season, and not with washed up veterans, but with good, young hitting prospects.

Had a lot of fun yucking it up with you guys this season once again. Haven’t been on much this Fall, but watched almost every game on delay. Great season for the M’s. Felix, Cano, Seager, Ackley, Lo-Mo, Zunino, Saunders, Iwakuma, Paxton, Elias, Walker, the Bullpen and even James Jones makes for a positive future. If anyone had said at the start that we would win 87 games, we would have all taken it in a heartbeat!!! Go M’s!!!

  23. Woodcutta on September 28th, 2014 6:22 pm

Although, imo, it is more frustrating to see the M’s miss the playoffs by one game compared to what they have made the fans watch the last few years or so, the season was an overall success. There definitely needs to be some roster changes (I’m looking at you Jackson and Morales) but next season will easily be the best I’ve felt about the M’s future in a long time. Hopefully Jack Z takes the next necessary steps to continue the progress from this season and finally gives Felix a chance to pitch in the postseason. He more than deserves it. Go M’s!!!

Great game, guys! Wilhelmson breaking into a break dance after the game was hysterical! The reason I don’t post much is that I am on a 5 minute countdown before my posts register, so you all have moved on by the time my comment posts. Have asked to be removed from it but it hasn’t happened.

The other funny thing about the game was a group of fans in T shirts saying Who, What and I don’t know. When Zunino was at bat they yelled “Guess right!”. Love it and will miss it and baseball.

  25. NorahW on September 28th, 2014 9:51 pm

Really enjoyed this season, even though they missed the playoffs. I’m hopeful next year, especially if they get some more guys that can hit.

I hope they don’t feel the need to sign Morales for next year, even if he does want to come back and even if he would be cheap. I’m not convinced that Jackson is as bad as he seemed this year, but I wouldn’t like to see them keep him around if he started off next year the same way. One of the things that they’ve done in the past is hang on to guys too long (Smoak), and I hope they don’t do that in the future.

  26. NorahW on September 28th, 2014 9:54 pm

I wish the site owners would get rid of the “sigh” in the line under the title. It’s not really appropriate any more!

  27. RaoulDuke37 on September 28th, 2014 10:07 pm

Too bad that 5 game losing steak took control out of their hands.

  28. MrZDevotee on September 30th, 2014 4:52 pm

For me, I look at the MVP candidates, and see Nelson Cruz at $8 million getting lots of love (more than Cano) and putting up pretty damn good numbers, and think– MAN, for $9-$10 million, we could have had a real DH, who DEFINITELY would have made a difference on offense… Up and down the lineup.

We could have comfortably ended up with the #1 Wild Card, hosted that, and been headed to play the Angels.

I hope ownership thinks the same thing, and is kicking themselves… Making the playoffs probably would have paid for that salary by itself, from the residual income at the extra games.

To skimp on offense, and end up a game from the playoffs hurts worse than missing them by 10 games, in my book. All we needed was a DH. A REAL DH. Instead we punted that position (in handing it to two injured guys trying to return), and missed the playoffs by a game.
