Right now. It’s free. Recent 40-man addition Anthony Varvaro is starting and Dustin Ackley is leading off for the Javelinas.

Varvaro had a pretty solid outing. Gave up a single that bounced off the shortstop’s chest. The next batter flew out to Ackley in left, and after the runner was caught stealing, he struck out the final batter of the inning.
Bases loaded, no outs. Next batter hits an infield fly. Retherford, a White Sox prospect, hits a chopper to short, but the DP is broken up.
Desert Dogs 1, Javelinas 1.
Iorg gets plunked and the bases are reloaded. Which brings up Ackley…
Outside corner strike. Foul. Bouncer to short which the runner beats out at second! But the next batter grounds out.

Varvaro got the hook. Braddock is struggling a bit. Two hitters reached and then had a double steal. After that, the guy at the plate foul tips into a K. Ackley misses a ball in foul territory, which they give him an error for. It doesn’t come back to bite him though, as Braddock manages to get the K.
They’ve said that it’s a bullpen day for the Javelinas, so we might see Fields and Aumont later on.
Yeah that dude was quick to second. Gotta say that Dustin’s play in LF was tough. Error could have gone either way. He’s definitely quick to the ball. His instincts could be very helpful in the infield.
Just get done reading Daves post on Ackley being solid in the outfield (and thus not being the case for his anticipated switch to 2nd) and tuned into the game just in time to see him drop a catchable ball in foul territory.
Obviously its one play and all the stuff that Dave said is clearly still applicable – I just thought the unfortuitous timing of the play was amusing.
This game is on MLBTV on regular TV, too.
I’m really excited about the potential of his move to second. I was hopeful, although not expectant, that they might consider that on draft day. I think it would be a fantastic move for the organization if he can play there. Especially with Gutz in center.
i am pretty new to baseball and am just watching the fall league online, can anyone enlighten me as to Varvaros’ prospects?
Desme just hit a home run, so it’s 2-2. Then Nevin Ashley hits an opposite field home run, so 3-2 Desert Dogs. They’re the Yankees of the AFL. Root against them for variety’s sake.
Ackley was shaded pretty far to the other side and was struggling with the sun on top of that. It’s a tough play that few probably make.
Varvaro has life on his fastball and a big power curve, but his command can be pretty awful at times and he’ll either give you some of the ugliest Ks you’ve ever seen or the ugliest walks.
Thanks for that Jay so i’m guessing Varvaro probably isn’t going to make it then if he has no command.
Thanks for the notice it was on, and thanks MLB for providing a low minors game in HD when the NFL games frequently don’t have their in-game highlights in HD.
Varvaro’s command has improved markedly in the Fall League, but I’m disinclined to make too much of it just yet.
Danks was safe on a would-be DP, which allowed a runner to score from third, so it’s now 3-3 again.
Ackley grounds out on a 3-2 count. The broadcaster are talking about Ackley coming to the plate with a plan for each at-bat, and that seems to be a trend for player acquisitions in this era.
They also talked a bit about Dunigan and one of the guys (Tony Clark?) said, paraphrasing “There aren’t too many men that I’ve seen today that are stronger than Dunigan”.
Phillippe Aumont is also, by consensus, a great hockey name.
The Desert Dogs just got a run and now have a 4-3 lead. A runner, who had made his way from first to third on a stolen base and a throwing error, scored on a single.

Ackley looks like garbage today, and he isn’t being patient at all
C.J. Retherford just hit a two-run shot not only out of the playing field, but quite possibly out of the stadium entirely.

Ackley followed it up by hitting a single to right on a 0-1 count. The ball was a bit inside on him, so it looked like he went with it.

I have to admit I missed the first pitch of Ackley’s previous AB, but I was listening and I assumed he took it for a strike. He then went on to take the next four pitches as well including two balls after a 1-2 count to bring the count full. When’s the last time anyone saw a Mariner take the first 5 pitches of an AB? I thought it was beautiful.
By the way, he fouled off the next two pitches before grounding out to Josh Bell at third.

Right now, Carlos Triunfel is a young Yuniesky Betancourt. He is pretty loosy-goosy about his game and his commitment to fitness and his plate discipline. I think he’s less of a prospect than people believe. Michael Saunders, on the other hand, might be more of a prospect than people believe…maybe even ROY material.
That intel is a year out of date.
Can anyone enlighten me on this: saw the game and recognized a lot of names…but what’s the rough minor league equivalent of competition in the AFL? Double A?
Each organization sends four pitchers and three position players. Of these, one can be from below double-A, but the rest must be from double-A or higher.
