Rainiers Game Thread

Once again, no Mariners game means we give you a chance to talk Tacoma baseball. Garrett Olson takes the hill against Matt Kinney, but in more important news, Michael Saunders is playing his first game with the Rainers. He’s been activated from the DL and is starting in LF and batting leadoff. He’s been recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, but is apparently 100% again.
Mike Wilson will be back shortly too, so the Triple-A team is about to have too many outfielders. We’ll let you know when they announce who is going away.
Looks like Saunders is batting 2nd.
Wow, nice pitching by Olson through 2.
Curto is so awesome.
He’s talking about Scott McClain of Fresno being sold to the Hiroshima Carp of the Japan Leagues, and how the Rainiers won’t have to worry about his bat terrorizing them anymore. On cue, there’s a foul pop up, and Curto says “Mike Carp, no relation to Hiroshima, chases the foul to the stands”.
No inflection, no signs of joking, just total deadpan.
OK, I didn’t see a radio link, so where can I listen to the game?
Normally, I’d be at the wine bar (saving for vacation) or at the YMCA (resting after hiking 10 miles yesterday) and CSI doesn’t start for 90 minutes. And now there’s no Mariners either. I’m going stir crazy.
This is the first time I’ve ever listened, and I agree wholeheartedly. It’s strange to listen with no analyst, though.
Saunders 3-run HR!
Listen here.
Also, Saunders just hit a three run HR.
Curto’s awesome! I’m still ticked they didn’t promote him to the big league club.
And Saunders goes YARD! I knew I should’ve snuck up to T-Town tonight when I heard he was back.
THANKS DAVE! Yeah, DMZ has been plugging Curto for years and now I see why. I’ve been listening for 30 seconds, and he’s got that warm, soothing tone. And thanks to my MSNTV2 unit, I can listen to Curto in the background and post here at the same time (minus checking on the blade steak, of course.)
Josh Fields gave up four runs in 2/3 of an inning for West Tennessee tonight, by the way.
YIKES! So I assume that was as a reliever and not a starter? ‘sigh’
We really could do with Saunders flipping out in Tacoma this year. Great start
SAFE WITH A SLIDE! And the other runners move up 90 feet!
That really is hilarious. And Mike Carp now knows what to name is first/next child.
I think the effect would be spoiled if Curto was doing play-by-play for the M’s, though, because you’d have Sims/Blowers/Rizzs/somebody breaking in to ruin the deadpan.
Good thing the Mariners aren’t desperate for a right-handed reliever, then.
I can’t believe I didn’t go tonight. Damn.
Looks like Chris Seddon —> DL to make room for Saunders.
Since we’re listening to the Rainiers, I’ll ask this one. Back in 2007, there was an event at an Everett game and a Tacoma game. I had a ticket to the Everett game but couldn’t go (DON’T get me started on why). As that was two years ago, I think I know the answer to this one. But is there any chance of doing that again?
Yea, it would be interesting to see how this regime would handle a top prospect tearing up Triple-A in the middle of a pennant race. That said, Curto described the home run as “a fly ball that just kept carrying”.
Ever? Maybe. This year? Probably not. I can only make one trip back to Seattle this year, and while we’ll do a USSM event while I’m in town, it probably won’t be in Everett.
Redman gets on and drives one in!
Oh yeah, you’re trying to better yourself with an economics degree instead of pandering to us. LOL Oh well. I should get down to Tacoma (only 105 miles south) or over to Everett (only 62 miles to the Kingston-Edmonds ferry then the drive north) myself anyway.
Carp keeps lining out – he could just as easily be hitting .400.
OK, I got a 1.6 lb. beek chuck blade steak (marinated with olive oil and BBQ sauce for 30 minutes) in the oven at 250 for 20 minutes. It’s either gonna be shoe leather or really really good. And the Rainiers are leading 5-0!
And a LH outfielder, no less. Though Lambrick Park Secondary producing a major leaguer is as unlikely as… well, it’s not as unlikely as St. Michaels producing a two-time NBA MVP, but it’s up there.
The score is no longer the interesting about this game. (Not even Saunders’ return)
And if Dave Sims were covering the game, that which is very interesting would have already been jinxed away…
DAMN
Speaking of jinxing…
Ugh.
And you guys just did.
6 1/3 no-hit innings, congrats Garrett Olson!
Speaking of which, check out Matt Garza’s line tonight.
Well shoot, CSI’s about to start. See ya later everybody! Thanks!
Four outs for Clement, including 3 Ks (at least two against a right hander). He’s certainly not making a good case to get called up anytime soon.
Also, check out Aaron Heilman’s line. I’ll take an injured Cedeno, thanks. (Would’ve loved to have seen Lou’s reaction.)
Losing Seddon and Vargas on the same night is a bit of a problem in Tacoma. That’s 2/5 of the starting rotation. Who takes those spots?
Fister is probably one.. Downs or Stark for the other, or is someone coming up?
okori,
Eh, not such a big deal. The guy with recent experience in the rotation is Thomas, and they may go that route if they want to get Mike Wilson activated.
Still, someone’s going to have to come up when Cesar Jimenez is activated by Seattle, so more moves are afoot.
Fister starts tonight, Double-A call-up on Sunday.
That Saunders home run was pretty cool; they had put up his BA before the game as being 0.0, so it was pretty sweet to see him smack it over the wall; it didn’t look like it was going to go out for a minute, and I think the Grizzlies’ CF thought he had it, too. Saunders got a standing ovation for his efforts…
