Silva, pitching machine

DMZ · April 25, 2009 at 9:38 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Generated off the Brooks Baseball tool

Carlos Silva again had two pitches. Neither of them had much sink to them.

Here’s Vertical Movement Against Speed.

Silva Vertical Movement Against Speed

Nothing drops at all, and those fastballs are coming in at 89 over and over.

And here’s how much movement he’s getting on his pitches in both directions: horizontal movement against vertical movement.

Horizontal Movement Against Vertical Movement

Smear of that mediocre, not-moving-even-if-you-call-it-a-sinker fastball up, and nine other pitches.

This was the same start he’s given the M’s all season. I’m sure we’ll see some kind of celebration because he would up with a “W” next to his name, but opposing teams are going to catch onto this really quick.

    Wound up.

But yeah, I love brooksbaseball. They could just leave the same graph up for Silva every start.

  2. DMZ on April 25th, 2009 9:47 pm

    That is too funny.

    Pitching…pitching…pitching…he’s a pitching macheeeeeen!

But seriously, the ones you see at a batting cage probably have more movement on their pitches — and those are mechanical.

The M’s have to just put up 9 runs every time he pitches.

  5. coasty141 on April 25th, 2009 10:36 pm

Coming into this game hitters were putting up a 269/310/507 (lefties 351/385/649) line against Carlos. The bad news… his BABIP was .259. This could get real ugly.

I would like to see the graphs of the double a ball rookie that pitch against him. Bet it was mucho better. This organization knows what is going on unlike the prvious one.
I wonder how much longer they will keep rolling him out there. I was yelling at the TV again. Not a good sign considering the state of selling estates. Real estate salesmen the new postal workers.

    Silva, pitching machine

much like the one sent to the showers by Ichiro.

I’m sure you’ll love the Silva quotes about pitching through his stiff shoulder, too.

I thought from the headline that this was one of those Johnny Carson Great Carnak things, you know, from Funk and Wagnall’s porch in a mayonnaise jar. “Carlos Silva, pitching machine.” “Name something that where you can guess every pitch in advance and a big hunk of metal.”

    Wrong. Absolutely wrong.

They caught on a long time ago. I was busy shooting something until 8 or so, and didn’t see him pitch, but his lack of talent wasn’t a secret when we signed him, and I don’t think it’s a secret now.

Anyone notice, we won. Happy about Silva? Nope .Washburn, maybe we sweep.

  12. lerasso on April 26th, 2009 12:54 am

Ok yes, I was rooting for Silva last nite… for once he got a win! His sinking stuff was really not working as we can see (and could tell)!!, for long time ago for that matter! Talking about location: I thought he was putting the ball in good-spot-to-gets-outs often… I’m probably wrong and angels bats just got a bad day, but I had a lot of fun watching Slimmer doing the trick, I mean he didnt had a win for long time ago and surely he’s not as bad a pitcher.

  13. Axtell on April 26th, 2009 12:55 am

Baker is already giving Silva mad props for his ‘gutting’ (pun intended) out 5 innings tonight. I see Silva, as hittable as ever, just an Angels team that’s so decimated by injuries they couldn’t field a competitive team to hit Silva out of the park.

I’m sure Wak and Z are seeing the same data we are – how can they put up with his inability to get any movement at all on his pitches?

  14. lerasso on April 26th, 2009 1:20 am

I mean his best pitch was when he was facing red-hot Torii Hunter in a now-or-shower situation and he managed to make an offpitch that made it… helping the team go for the w.

  15. Sinking Away on April 26th, 2009 1:27 am

I’m with you Axtell, he’s as hittable as he was 300 days ago, but what are you going to do? We have to pay him, we might as well get some innings to go with it. Fortunately, we scored 9 runs tonight and it was enough to get a win. We won’t score that many in all of his starts, but he is going to get those starts. Maybe they are counting on luck. They must be. Plus, he can’t possibliy be unable to ever get any batters out again, can he? He certainly looks very hittable, but maybe he can regain his pre-200? form. We’ll see.

Hello, I’m from Sequim and I like to get really high before I post comments on USSM. I never learned the difference between singular and plural, past and present tense, or English and Spanish. Making sense is not an option for me.

These two are not related. Perhaps this user is some sort of futuristic SpamBotâ„¢ sent to our planet to infect us with nonsensical, subliminal advertising.

wow, give just a little credit an confidence to man, he’s surely not felix or beddard. but fight his butt to get it done.

  19. EnglishMariner on April 26th, 2009 5:56 am

When does the time come that the team realises that Silva cannot pitch, has not been able to pitch for years, and decides that this guy is a sunk cost with no upside – and ditches him?

I’d rather see RRS and Jaka 4 and 5 than Silva and one other.

  20. rsrobinson on April 26th, 2009 6:22 am

For some reason I keep hearing Mike Scioscia channeling Dennis Green in my head:

“Carlos Silva is who we thought he was…and we let him off the hook!”

  21. Paul B on April 26th, 2009 6:27 am

give just a little credit an confidence to man,

    Silva is a confidence man?

    That explains a lot.

  22. terry on April 26th, 2009 8:08 am

    Silva is a confidence man?

I don’t know about all of this “Silva is a confidence man” stuff. I do know this though…Branyan has been the manyan…

  23. joser on April 26th, 2009 10:33 am

Silva is going to have an especially good outing now and then (and sadly, Saturday was about as good as it gets with him). That shouldn’t radically change our opinion of him. Bad pitchers have good outings (especially against offensively-challenged teams); good pitchers have bad outings (especially against offensively-endowed teams). Just look at Halladay’s recent loss to Texas. From that one start Jays fans should not conclude that Halladay is on an inevitable decline any more than we should conclude Silva is on an inevitable climb.

(BTW, for a nice contrast with Silva’s Pitch FX data, take a look at Halladay’s graphs for that start, and remember this is his worst game so far this year.)

  24. lerasso on April 26th, 2009 11:23 am

I just liked how you put it…

  25. RefusetoLose95 on April 26th, 2009 11:27 am

How can someone that goes 300+ days without a win still have a starting spot? WHY IS HE STILL HERE?

  26. lerasso on April 26th, 2009 11:35 am

Somehow I have to say that Silva isn’t my favorite player and I was pushing something because I sympathize

  27. wabbles on April 26th, 2009 11:59 am

Silva’s still here because of that albatross contract. Once upon a time, the albatross was the first bird that sailors spotted upon approaching land. So if you killed one, they made you wear the dead carcas around your neck. That’s Silva’s contract for us.
What I found interesting was how the announcers were rooting for Silva to get his five innings and get the win, just like you would for a rookie pitcher making his first start. This was before we learned of the injury. Yeah, 300 days without a win and all that. But it was as though even the announcers now realize he sucks.
Which brings me to his injury. I’m wondering if that’s a ruse to get him out of the rotation for a couple of starts until we can work out a deal to trade him for a bucket of baseballs.

  28. lerasso on April 26th, 2009 12:10 pm

Yep I got a pretty good idea of that, simply nobody wants him because that: 1)albatross and 2)no performance

  29. lerasso on April 26th, 2009 1:14 pm

please forgive me when i was too pushy on rooting, just didn’t know for a fact whatsoever what things were like they were.
