USSM on KJR returns

Okay, it actually returned last week, but I wasn’t feeling well enough to put up a post about it. However, if you enjoyed my conversations with the Groz last year, you’ll be happy to know that we’re planning on doing them every Monday at 2:35 pm pacific time this year. As always, you can listen online or just use your old fashioned radio and tune it to 950 am.
Great news! Keep spreading the truth, and eventually at least some folks will listen. Now, if we can only get the commenters on the P-I blog to read and understand some of your writing about all these ‘voodoo statistics’ (actual quote), we might have a semi-educated fan base sometime in the future.
Yeah! The most enjoyable 10 minutes on radio. I look forward to both a reappearance of the robot voice and a bid by Dave to break his own personal “words per minute” record, which I think stands as a record for anyone who is not actually a professional auctioneer.

Barry Bonds went to the World Series. Therefore, Barry Bonds is a proven leader and the Mariners should sign him. I turned KJR on 5 minutes too early.

In Groz’s defense, he was making the (good) argument that Bonds would be a great addition to the team’s offense. He cited his OBP, walks, homers, etc., as well as the fact that his swing is perfect for Safeco.
I agree with Dave, on the field as a DH he would be the best improvement on the market. The circus that comes along with him is the deciding factor.
Would he really cause a fan not to go see Ichiro? Not in my opinion.
Agreed. He also seems to have a high opinion to what Dave has to say.
At the risk of contributing to a potentially dangerous conversation:
I would love to see the Mariners sign Bonds and put him at DH.
I think that he’s been unfairly singled out (let’s not debate this here, please, that is just my opinion; if you want to disagree, that’s up to you), and I further think that given everything that’s happening this year, he is going to a) sign relatively cheaply for the offense he will bring to a team and b) be a very, very good boy due to the increased scrutiny on him.
Obviously, if he wants a 3 year contract and/or some crazy amount, you walk away, but if he’s willing to sign for say 1 year, 8 million a year, then I don’t know how you DON’T do it.
his agent has literally been driving from camp to camp in Florida, shopping him with no bites — which either means no one wants the headache, or that Barry hasn’t come down on his demands…
I’m not going to argue for Bonds one way or the other, but can you just imagine how that would change the lineup? Would we actually get rid of Turbo? Would someone actually take him from us?
We’d get respectable power numbers from the DH position!

Barry Bonds is under indictment for perjury. He’s a absolute PR nightmare waiting to happen for any team. The Ms are way too obsessed with their squeaky clean image to risk having Barry’s picture in their uniform splashed across every paper, website and TV program in the world if he ends up having to serve jail time. To be fair I think most teams want no part of Barry either.
Bonds is way past Jose Guillen/Milton Bradley stuff … I think there’s serious interest in the media and behind the scenes to nail Bonds to the wall sooner or later …
Right now Barry Bonds is like a skunk … approach at your own risk. The inevitable stink will be heavy and difficult to wash off.

Since when were the Mariners squeaky clean?
You’d think the M’s could swing some sort of Washburn + prospect deal for Junior in order to get a legit LH DH/OF (while lightening up the Reds’ payroll), but in the absence of that, Bonds would be an amazing offensive addition.
Yes, I realize “offensive” applies both to what he’d do with a bat as well as what he’d do from PR standpoint. If nothing else he’d help show the M’s hitters how to take a pitch or three.
It’s never really the offseason until the “let’s trade for Griffey!” posts start.
To make that sound a little less snide: I wasn’t a fan yet during the Griffey glory years, and I just don’t really understand the continuing fascination with him.
So it makes me giggle every time someone wants to bring him back. I look at him and see a 38-year-old with bad hamstrings, not the shining example of Mariners glory days that so many people see.
Bring back Al Cowens, dammit!
Speaking of the Mariners, and “squeaky clean”, oft-speculated-about ex-Mariner Bret Boone, after signing a non-guaranteed minor league contract five days ago with the Washington Nationals, has been promoted to the big league camp.
He’s competing now with Ronnie Belliard, primarily, but Felipe Lopez can play either 2B or SS (so the article says). I wonder if Boonie’s dad came up with the “better than expected” evaluation…

Although usually the “trade posts” as I recall become more frequent at the trade deadline most every year.
Dave has in past years identified a right or left handed basher on waivers coming out of Spring Training. Any heads up on who may be on this years to watch list? That will improve the offense.

Desparate times call for desparate measures… When Jose Vidro is your starting DH and the option of Bonds is an appealing alternative I would say that calls for Griffey are not only justified, but a moral obligation.

You want Kenji, Yuni, Lopi, Beltri, & Ichi (137 walks w/2818 AB’s – combined) to lose their aggressiveness at the plate?

OBP, OPS are overrated. Griffey’s sweet swing will get the fans out to the ball park and put the M’s over the top.

Okay your right, it is not particularly close. I’d like to see DMZ play some ‘Stratomatic’ with Barry as the DH.
Let’s not forget that Safeco Field was the “House that Griffey built”. There isn’t even a full season sample of what kind of numbers he could put up in Safeco field. I would choose Griffey over Bonds simply because of the baggage involved. I admit, he would great for the team’s performance. Bad for all the intangibles that make the team so great, such as veteran leadership, team chemistry, marketability. (I wish there was a sarcasm button.)
When I said he would be great, I meant Bonds.
