As much as the Pad’s offense is bad, it’s hard to complain about scoring reasonably with Peavy on the bump.

  2. cody on June 29th, 2008 4:09 pm

Agreed. (but at least we didn’t get shutout by Peavy)

  3. msb on June 29th, 2008 4:09 pm

    yup.

continuing the game theme, “they were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.”

  4. Sentinel on June 29th, 2008 4:11 pm

And I was wondering why ESPN had the M’s listed as the third worst team, and not the worst. Now I know.

  5. sealclubber253 on June 29th, 2008 4:18 pm

Yeah, but at least they don’t have the ugliest uniforms in baseball. But at the same time, I can’t think of anyone’s whos is uglier. Maybe Oakland?

No offense, defense, and the picthing wasn’t very good. I guess things could be worse for us.

Man, it must suck to be a Padre. But San Deigo would be a great place to live/play.

Now we just have to hope management doesn’t decide this series of games against awful teams (Mets and Pads, at least) doesn’t mean these guys are actually any good.

  7. beckya57 on June 29th, 2008 4:21 pm

I’m worried too, Ralph, I can imagine them coming to that conclusion too. All together now: “This 3 game sweep DOES NOT mean the M’s have ‘turned the corner.’ It means they have spent the last 3 days playing a really awful team.”

  8. docmarsh on June 29th, 2008 4:46 pm

I like the poignant sarcasm behind this line:

All I know is, the M’s pounded out 18 hits today. When you do that, you tend to win. Even when 16 of those hits are singles.

    -Geoff Baker’s blog

Awesome! 16 singles. Almost enough change for a twenty.

Christ. It’s almost as if our clean-up hitter was a “Punch-and-Judy Hitter”

    Felix on Tuesday!

    Felix on Tuesday!

    Sadly. No.

I was talking to my father who, because he lives in Canada and subscribes to Rogers cable, has no choice but to follow the Blue Jays. He said of them: “They have no offense, but at least they have pitching. I don’t what they’d be if they didn’t have pitching.” And I said (naturally) “They’d be the Mariners, Dad. They’d be the Mariners.”

But San Deigo would be a great place to live/play

And today it was significantly warmer at Safeco than Petco. How often does that happen?

Hey, it’s good enough for me. Next up: a Very Special deal with Cincy.

    /sarcasm off

Holy crap, the Dodgers-Angels had another crazy 1-0 game, though alas the Angels won this one. (Not as crazy as last night’s Rockies/Tigers game though). And, since we’re on the topic of crazy fangraphs and we’re allowed three links per post, check out how the Diamondbacks managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory today. Poor Dan Haren: 7 IP, 7K, 0 R, and the team still loses. Wasn’t it just last year Bob Melvin was being labeled a genius for his use of the bullpen?

  13. abender20 on June 29th, 2008 9:40 pm

Yeah Brandon Lyon did have an extremely impressive -.791 WPA today.

Padres don’t suck, they just, well in politcaly correct terms, need to improve in hurry. Ironic that they suck after they got rid of Mike Cameron like the Mariners(just not as fast, he atleast had mercy and put them out right away). Watch what happens to the brewers when he leaves.

  15. JMHawkins on June 29th, 2008 10:20 pm

It’s called June Gloom. The weather in SD in June usually kinda sucks, at least by SD standards.

I’m going to be very annoyed if we end up having to listen to lots of sappy stories about Strasburg being picked by his hometown team.

  17. davecooperstown on June 30th, 2008 4:57 am

If my day wasn’t going good enough after sweeping a great Padres team from the one of the best divisions in baseball in the N.L. West, I was lucky enough to run across a nice little piece on King Felix being voted the most dominating pitcher by his peers on Buster’s blog on ESPN. CHECK IT OUT!

  18. msb on June 30th, 2008 8:20 am

well, if you pay for Insider status 🙂

  19. jimbob on June 30th, 2008 8:26 am

Mariners experienced what’s known as the “Cher effect”. Cher always put some unattractive wench next to her to enhance perception of her beauty. Padres were ugly enough to scare paint off a wall.

  20. msb on June 30th, 2008 11:57 am

gee. according to Fain and various callers it is because Riggleman put the hammer down, and isn’t afraid to take chances.

  21. wabbles on June 30th, 2008 12:52 pm

RE 20: So it’s come to this, our manager has resorted to using common workman tools as props. I’m assuming he didn’t put the hammer down ON anyone as that would be assault.

  22. msb on June 30th, 2008 1:12 pm

maybe that’s what happened to Vidro’s knee …

  23. Mothy on June 30th, 2008 7:39 pm

If that is what happened to Vidro’s knee, then I think I like Riggleman’s style.
