Frustrating losses make us start sniping at each other. I suppose we could all stand to relax.

    Um…

#129 – the guys that scored were all put on by Felix. If you want to admire the man for being successful, but deny his responsibility when he is not, then I have a job at Fox News for you.

I know I’m late to the linguistic discussion, but the reason we say “Sexson flied out to right” is that if we say “Sexson flew out” it sounds like he literally took wing and landed in the outfield, not that he sent a ball there. In other words, “flew” is the intransitive form, and “flied” is the transitive form. You could make an analogy with “He laid down the bat” vs “He lay down (in the grass)”.

I’m trying to figure out whether the differing size of my pupils means imminent death, but in between, damn, Felix!

Uh, if you’re not kidding, and that condition persists, I’d be a little worried. Do you remember everything that happened in the last 24 hours, and did any of it involve hitting your head?

    Ouch, Fox News. That’s cold.

150: Felix is certainly responsible for the runs he allowed, but it’s not Felix’s decision to stay in the game when he’s clearly tired.

I do need to take a break, that is maybe miss 1 or 2 games. Mariner baseball more or less consumes 6 months of my life. I do partake in many other things, but I rarely miss a game. I’m a very intense person and I live and die with each game. Just my personality. My blood pressure rose too high this past week after watching these gut wrenching losses. I’m sorry if you think that I’m a bandwagon fan because I simply need to take a break from going nuts over a team that I have no control over.

If I was a bandwagon fan would I really be watching a game like today? I’ve bled Mariner blue for years and I haven’t really seen that much success. But thanks for passing judgment.

But honestly, this offense looks lost. Wilkerson and Yuni being caught looking? Beltre (whom I love) swinging at a pitch around his neck? Where is the heart and desire? Is there a solution to fix these woes? I’m just extremely frustrated, as a die hard fan, watching this same crap almost daily.

Joser–both verbs are intransitive. “Flied” does not have a direct object. Who or what did he fly? Ummm…. I mentioned before that “fly out” is a verb with a particle. Check the earlier comments for a better explanation.

Also, I think this whole discussion is a grammar issue, not a linguistic one.

    156 – don’t you mean a grammatical argument?

  10. Breadbaker on April 27th, 2008 4:19 pm

158: Perhaps he meant Grammer. Frasier wasn’t much of a Mariners fan.

joser: I think it’s just this medicine I’m taking. They’re back to normal now. But thanks!

Evanr, thanks for picking up the intransitive issue. What you said.

Can we just seriously dump everyone in this bullpen aside from J.J. right now, please?

  13. currcoug on April 27th, 2008 5:51 pm

Forget about the bullpen, the rot starts at the top.

Nothing will change unless this team is sold, and the current regime flushed out into the Sound.

It has been a struggle early on, but I do think Morrow has potential. The problem is I’m fairly certain Bavasi see’s him as a potential Papelbon type… hence he has been thrust into a bullpen roll although he would probably be best suited as a starter. While it is a role he could probably succeed in, the team has no concept of patience and will not let him perfect his craft in the minors. The kid has a good outing or two and they rush him back up and then are surprised when he struggles. His mismanagement epitomizes the shortcomings of the Mariner higher-ups.

#161: Better be more specific than that if that is what you wish for, remember what happened to the Sonics. . .

Is it possible that we could trade lopez, vidro, sexson, beltre, Ibanez, Wilkerson, and just about everyone not named J.J, Felix, or Ichiro(and Bedard, if we could work it out) to the Athletics for Billy Beane. I mean he tore down the Athletics and rebuilt them at a breakneck pace over the off season. I think the Athletics are legit contenders in the AL west. When the M’s start to get it in gear, we could have a three way race for first place.

This team is really bad offensively. We got 8 hits today and 2 of them were Jack Cust gifts. No one got more than one hit. I was looking at Adrian Beltre’s line on the scoreboard today, and it hit me….Beltre started this game hitting .293/.381/.511, he’s hitting behind Ichiro, Jose, and Raul, and in 26 games now he has 8 RBI’s, 4 of which are himself. I can’t frigging believe Adrian has 4 RBI’s other than himself in a month’s work. No wonder we’re losing; no one is getting on base.

The Mariners have developed new and innovative ways to lose and bring great disappoint to their fans.

They can even turn Felix Day into a downer.

    Re: # 146 –

    the offense does have problems.
So do the offenses of many other teams.
Take a look at the box scores, and you’ll notice that many teams have two or three players hitting in the low two-hundreds, or even lower.
It’s only late-April. Look again in late May.

Unfortunately that’s the same thing people said about Sexson last year.
