That was just way too much fun.
Yeah, but they lost the game! Sure, Felix is great, we all know that, but the point is supposed to be to WIN GAMES! Or have we all forgotten about that little detail?
It isn’t Felix’s job to win the game. It’s his job pitch the best he can to help his team win. Just like it’s everyone else’s job to do what they can to help the team win.
Should Felix have maybe gone, ‘I’m gassed’? Probably. But that’s Mac’s job as a manager. He’s not a f***ing babysitter. He’s a big league manager (or, he’s a manager for a big league franchise).
With Mel and Norm Norm he’s got at least two sets of eyes on Felix in addition to his own. One of those three should have made a good case for sending the reliever in at the top of the inning. Chalk this up as another learning experience for Felix and the coaches handling him.
Galaxieboi has it right. Whether the team wins isn’t directly under Felix’s control unless he strikes out every batter for an indefinite number of innings until the M’s finally score.
Felix pitched exceptionally well, and he should be applauded for it.

A little off topic, but I haven’t seen it anywhere else. Does this concern anyone:

Those being the pitch counts from felix’s last 4 games.
As far as the pitch counts go, I think you have to look at how many times he had to really gear up to throw high stress type pitches. Yesterday, I don’t know that he had to do that too much until the 8th. I’m not too worried about the 117 because of that, but the trend is a little disturbing. If Putz gets back into a groove and the rest of the bullpen gets in order, McLaren won’t feel like he has to stick with Felix like he did Sunday.
BPro has Felix at 4th in MLB in Pitcher Abuse Points right now. Everyone seems to have an opinon on the PAP system (Bill James doesn’t much care for it), but I’d recommend reading doing a google search on the subject and checking it out.
Yesterday worried me. When you’re that awesome for 7 innings and go back out there at look like Felix did in the 8th, you’re really tired. And being really tired is when the abuse piles on. Shame on the ‘coaching’ staff.
Before the game, McLaren stated on FSN that the coaches “took away” Felix’s curveball last season. Apparently the pitch was causing him some elbow pain. McLaren’s comment reminded me of the discussion here last year regarding Felix’s pitch selection. McLaren’s explanation was encouraging and it’s good to know that the coaches were taking a long-term view of Felix’s health.
Maybe this is a stupid question, but where does one acquire such high-quality pictures from a game, let alone when the game is still in progress? Just wondering, because a casual search of the internet for Mariners pictures usually results in a mess of small, pixelated garbage.
From Section 133 I counted 6 bats broken by Felix, including every bat in the Frank Thomas Collection. Speaking of Big Frank, was his broken bat, line-drive “bunt†not the unluckiest hit you have ever seen? If he hits the ball to ANY other 3-inch square of grass on the infield, the result would have been an out somewhere.

Screencaps from the HD feed? They’re all considerably smaller than 720p, and you can clean up quite a bit when scaling down. Dave does photography for a living, so I’d guess a basic PS unsharp mask is well within his skillset.
