USSM redhot book giveaway!

DMZ · March 30, 2007 at 6:50 pm · Filed Under Off-topic ranting, Site information

Hey, I’ve got a paperback copy of “Baseball Between the Numbers: Why Everything You Know About the Game Is Wrong” edited by friend-of-the-site Jonah Keri, with a new afterward. Jonah did an awesome job with the book, it’s chock-full of good stuff, and it’s free. I’ll spring for postage and everything. Drop a comment here indicating your interest in this free book.

One rule: you must have registered before today. I will check. If I pick you and you registered today, I’ll pick again.

You may wonder “Derek, it seems like if I could somehow show that I purchased or gave a nice review of your book, the excellent Cheaters Guide to Baseball, that my chances of winning this seemingly unrelated giveaway would dramatically increase.”

And I would say “With that kind of mindset, I know just the book for you: a Cheaters Guide to Baseball. But you’re welcome to try to influence the outcome that way.”

I need “Baseball Between the Numbers”. I’ve been a baseball fan since Yaz was a rookie. I use stats at work to analyze the stuff that I make but I don’t get why you guys rely on baseball stats so much. Honest. Sometimes I think you guys are missing all the fun.

Send a copy to this poor college student and mariners fan struggling to make it in division three baseball while in exile in minnesota.

    hi

  4. VaBeachMarinersFan on March 31st, 2007 9:47 am

Send it to me for 5 reasons:

    1) I already ordered your book.
    2) I emailed the local #1 morning show about your book and how they should do an on air interview with you (Hampton Roads area has well over a million souls). (FM99.com)
    3) I heard my sister believes in having a very good time and I have her phone number.
    4) I donated $20 to the USSM Server fund.
    5) I may have incriminating pictures of Willie and Hargrove at a North Bend gas station.

    Thanks for the consideration

    I’d love a copy.

By the way, Powell’s emailed me yesterday to let me know my Cheater’s Guide is ready for in-store pickup.

Free is good. Count me in.
Amazon is slow in shipping my “Cheater’s Guide…”, so I would be cheater if I had posted a review already. Which I’m not. Mostly.

Not sure if it’s too late, but I’d love a copy.

Wow, if that’s not a persuasive pitch, I don’t know what is.

I actually e-mailed something like this to Rob Neyer, back when he was new at ESPN (when he was still really pretty good) and he explained how he used the equations to simply evualate a player. That the current measurements (metrics) were misleading. Ever since then, I’ve paid much more attention to the other metrics out there, and didn’t mind the statistical analysis. As a matter of fact, I actually prefer them to stand-alone scouting methods (shocker of shockers). Stick with it, you will too!

Well, interestingly enough, I just tried to post this under your thread about your NY Times review, but for some reason you pulle dthat post down.

Anyway, I should get the book because I literally just got done reading your book. I flew from Seattle to San Jose for a Rotis baseball draft and I couldn’t put it down. Made the flight go very quick. Aside from a few editing issues, Which you can expect in any book, it was fabulous. I even got *most* the humor.

  20. DMZ on March 31st, 2007 4:37 pm

Whoops, sorry – yeah, that post went live when I was still editing it for a couple minutes, and then I polished it off and put it back in public.

Hey, if you liked it that much, you could do me a good turn and punch in a review at Amazon — it’d be a big help.

  21. MedicineHat on March 31st, 2007 4:38 pm

Another reason I should get the book is, I could probably get you an interview on KRKO 1380 with “the Fish”.

    Bribery = good

Is that sarcasm? That’s sarcasm, huh? I couldn’t see what you’re facial expressions were doing or hear the tone.

I use facial expressions and auditory ques to be able to communicate at work but I don’t get why some guys would rely on those things for baseball blogs. Honest. Sometimes I think you guys are missing all the fun.

I’d love to have something new to read whilst sitting in that Idaho traffic that just might come up during one or two game threads this season. (Mod queue here I come…)
