I’d also like to saw that so far, I find Dave Sims to be so far superior to the former alternate television broadcaster that it’s ridiculous. You can try and talk me out of it, tell me that he’ll wear on me eventually, but I’m loving it so far.

Got the game on WGN and Fox, the latter of which is unfortunately staticky.
Bases loaded, heart of the lineup coming up. The pitcher’s just walked two in a row. What’s the best thing to do–swing at the first pitch and pop up barely past the pitcher? Natch.

this team loaded the bases last year. and left them there.
They really didn’t load the bases very often. And they had a decent, if unspectacular, OPS when the bases were loaded, too.
There were lots of things wrong with the Mariners in 2006, but I’m not buying bases loaded hitting as a big problem from last year.
The new Dave is already starting to annoy me.

Bad I’d say. Since either Jeremy Reed or Willie Bloomquist is likely to ‘replace’ him.
Broussard would certainly replace him, which is bad, but not that bad.
Bad. We’ll be losing by 5 instead of 3.
But Broussard would have hit a three-run homer.
Putz looks good, I’m happy. Even though the cap makes him look 50.
So what exactly happened to Guillen?
Is anyone really surprised that after a pitcher walks the bases loaded, our genius hitters swing at the very first pitch?
He took a funky step or two after he caught a fly ball. I doubt it’s an injury. Just a sore ankle.
Hargrove said he had a sore ankle earlier in the game.
Well I hope Grover’s ankle gets better 😉
Seriously though, I think Mateo can POSSIBLY help us this year if he’s healthy. He did pitch a little better in the few weeks before his season ended last year. But I have full confidence that no matter how much he bounces back that Hargrove will still find a way to use him too much in the wrong situations. (I guess that’s hardly a bold prediction…sigh)
What happened to the Spring Training Master Plan that called for losing all the early games and winning all the late games to enter the season on a rush? Did the memo get lost?
122 – It’s all part of the Mariners’ MASTER-master plan to lose all their remaining games, thereby lulling the competition into complacency just before the regular season starts. It’s all very sophisticated game theory that Bavasi and Hargrove derived over the offseason.
Funny thing. The A’s signed Todd Walker (the man discussed here a few days ago as ‘most like Jose Vidro’) to a minor league deal for peanuts.
Versus what WE paid for a man that IS Jose Vidro…
Three innings down on the last game of the spring and no game post of any kind. The word on Guillen is that he’s going to be fine, but he gets the day off and Broussard gets the start in RF. The M’s go meekly in the first. Soriano leads off the bottom half with a LD to CF that I think Ichiro could have dove for and caught, but it’s the spring and he’s Ichiro. Instead he blocked it to keep Soriano to a single. After a steal, a sacrifice and an RBI Hit up the middle by Lee, Ramirez hit into a DP to get the M’s out of it with only 1 run given up. The second inning went the same for the M’s and again in the bottom half they got out of it with a Double Play to end the inning, only this time without giving up a run. All the starters who’ve gotten an AB (except Ibanez and Broussard) have been removed for Bench players already, with Broussard moving to first, Jones in CF, Morse in RF and Dawkins at 3B. Johjima Leads off the Third with the first hit for the M’s, a double in the LF Corner. Johjima Advances to third on a 1-2 WP that didn’t get far away from Blanco. Betancourt strikes out on a 2-2 pitch in the dirt and Lopez grounds out to the Pitcher. That puts Adam Jones up with 2 outs and the tying run at third. His solid single tyes the game at 1. Jones then steals second on an 0-1 pitch. Dawkins then strikes out looking at a ball. So what if it was called a strike, it was way outside. Substitutions at this point see only Johjima left at C and Broussard still in at first of the starters, with Bloomquist in at 2B, Ordonez at short and Saunders at LF. Bot-3rd Walker got a single with a drag bunt down to first (throw might have gotten him but went over pitchers head) then was thrown out by Johjima trying to steal second and the rest is easy outs. So it’s tied 1-1 after 3.
In a bid to split the gritty vote, with two out Ordonez steals 2nd in the 5th and comes up covered in dirt. Unfortunately that’s as far as he gets.
Top of the fourth the M’s went 1-2-3 for the 3rd time. Weaver came on in the fourth and pitched the first 1-2-3 inning for the M’s.
Top of the Fifth with 2 down Cedeno dives at a hit by Ordonez and can’t get a throw off in-time as Ordonez starts to dive headfirst at 1B then changes his mind and stumbles over the bag falling to his face 10 feet after first. On a 0-2 pitch Ordonez steals second as the throw goes into CF only for Saunders to SO on the next pitch. Burke comes in at Catcher and Ward gets a hit to RF on a 1-1 pitch leading off. Ordonez comes in hard on a grounder off Blanco’s bat, throws to second and Bloomquist drops the ball, fumbling a possible DP. Walker sacrifices Ward to Third and Blanco to Second, now 1 out. Weaver Strikes out Matt Camp. Theriot Flies out to RF for the 3rd out. Five played, tied 1-1. The way Weaver pitched to the last 2 hitters here was actually impressive, more so than the 1-2-3 forth inning.
Weaver and the umpire are seeing eye-to-eye on that outside corner of the plate this afternoon.
