I must admit, I find it a little mean-spirited for people to say “God that was lucky” or “thank goodness it was right at him” when a bad fielder makes a good play. But I think a “tip of the cap” probably does describe exactly what those folks were offering to Raul. Most said “nice play, but…” which did recognize the effort involved.
If Raul is your childhood friend or you’re face to face with the guy, I’m sure anyone would be more conventionally polite. But really, among rabid sports fans? Seems like the USSM treatment is about as good as a failing player can expect.
Besides, everyone knows that it’s Willie Bloomquist that I really hate.
I’m even linked back from his Wikipedia entry for calling him “Princess Willie” even though I’m pretty sure I’m not the person that originally coined that.
