Slow news monday

DMZ · February 27, 2006 at 11:32 am · Filed Under Mariners

No announcement of the Ibanez signing. Presumably they’re working on setting up the parade and related infrastructure, like the platform where Edgar Martinez, gun held to the small of his back, will pass a fake torch while ownership applauds.
Former M’s cavalcade:
Mike Cameron (Moore, PI), Bret Boone (Stone, Times)
Guardado passes up WBC in favor of the M’s (PI), Pineiro does not (TNT)
Hargrove chewed out some infielders (PI)

Best read of the day is probably about Rafael Soriano’s relationship with pitching coach Rafael Chaves (TNT)

hey, you wouldn’t have to hold a gun on Edgar. He love Raul 🙂

I liked Stone’s piece on Boone… it was one of the few that has gotten across that (for the most part) it’s a persona, not the man. fwiw, there was also a Finnegan piece on Rob Johnson and the news that Vina has a hip flexor

oh, and you still don’t mess with the Rocket.

And thus begins Vina’s long hard road to claiming the Pokey Reese Memorial Trophy.

Wait. You mean you missed that the first woman was elected to Cooperstown today (while Buck O’Neal and Minnie Minoso are still waiting for their spots)?

    Very nice, davepaisley.

Er, make that Buck O’Neil. It was spelled wrong on one of the placards at a baseball card show he was signing at awhile ago, and to this day I get it wrong every time.

#3– I’d be afraid to create a Pokey Reese Memorial Trophy for fear we know who might claim it in future years.

#4–I was tempted to post the HOF story, mostly because I just can’t believe they left Buck O’Neil out, but I didn’t want to be the only poster this morning 🙂

ok, here’s some news– friday’s spring training game will be the first radio broadcast of the season…. KOMO at 12:05pm

Someone on here had written in another post, 10 feel good stories of Spring 2006. Some were already published and others not checked off yet.

Well, check off another. I heard that the hitting ‘coach’ was due to be on KJR AM today.

I can’t believe that Buck O’Neil was left out of the HOF. What a complete and utter slap in the face to him. There has been no greater ambassador of the Negro leagues baseball than he. I had been mulling over a road trip to cooperstown for his enshrinement, and now I’m mulling over skydiving into Bruce Sutter’s ceremony in protest.

well, Buck, bless him, is as sanguine as ever…

Hardball Times has a article that actually mentions WFB with regard to Hitting Discipline. If I’m interpretting this correctly, he gets thrown a higher percentage of strikes than all but 1 guy in MLB today. Basically, pitchers go after him…not helping the argument for putting him in the lineup, given his AVG/OPS numbers if he’s actually getting MORE legit pitches to hit than anyone else.

    Likewise stunned about Buck O’Neil…

Re: Manley, can you believe they actually had to have an “Anti-Lynching Day” at the ballpark? Guess it probably didn’t come with a bobblehead giveaway.

I’m surprised Ichiro isn’t in the top 5 for contact %.

Seattle Times has a great quote by Pinero:

Pineiro said he feels much better at the start of spring training this year compared with last year.

“It’s a complete turnaround, a 360,” he said. “But when I pitch in a game next Friday, it’s kind of going to be more realistic.”

A great turnaround that is 360 degrees different than last year.

    Wow

I think my favorite quote of the day comes from the WBC’s Dominican Team GM, one Stan Javier: “we have a nice line-up”

man, I just don’t know how Stanley managed to cobble a team together out of stiffs like Pujols, Tejada, Ortiz, Guerrero, Soriano, Beltre…

  16. msb on February 27th, 2006 8:04 pm

oh, and if we are going to get on someone for making the 180 vs 360 reference, I think you’ll be dealing with an enormous percentage of the human race. Including me.

    RE: link in 14

The end of the section regarding Foppert has the best quote.

“But it won’t be easy for Foppert to make the Mariners’ roster. Most of their rotation is returning.”

Because no one could ever bump Meche or Pineiro (especially if he has that 360 degree turnaround) and Moyer’s not getting old or anything.

Honestly, there aren’t too many rotations in the Major’s right now that a youngster has a better shot of cracking than the M’s.

Twins GM Terry Ryan on how the Twins have not had a 30 HR player since 1987:

“We’re not worried about our home run output. We’re worried about run production.”
