Game 160, Rangers at Mariners

DMZ · September 29, 2006 at 6:10 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

Padilla v Feireabend. The Mariners are playing for a shot at .488, the Rangers would love to continue beating up the M’s to finish above the break-even mark themselves.

What crazy lineup will the newly-emboldened Hargrove come up with? What wacky hijinks will he get up to?

Unfortunately, it looks like he wasn’t feeling particularly adventurous.
CF-L Ichiro
3B-R Beltre
C-R Johjima
LF-L Ibanez
1B-R Sexson
DH-L Broussard
2B-R Lopez
RF-L Snelling
SS-R Betancourt

    Good liquor is brown.

Sure it is, but I’ll drink very cold vodka in shots. Or tequila that’s transparent. Mmm, Patron Silver.

I have a bottle of Belvedere in the freezer at all times.

93 and 94 – Speaking of outfield throwing arms and conventional wisdom and such…

In general (and more important factors such as speed, range, routes, etc being equal), shouldn’t you put your best outfield arm in center, 2nd best arm in left and worst arm in right, since this is where the vast majority of throws come from? Isn’t putting your best arm in RF since that’s where the longest throws occur far less frequently kind of like saving your closer for save situations?

Everyone seems to accept that the best arm belongs in RF (in fact, it was long used as an argument why Ichiro shouldn’t play CF), but I just don’t see the logic in it. Anybody have anything to add to that.

    Captain Morgan is good.

    But I drink Admiral.

  5. eponymous coward on September 29th, 2006 8:44 pm

Throws to home, sure. The thing is a good arm in RF turns doubles to “oops singles”.

I’d argue that arm strength should play very little factor in deciding which outfielder plays where, so practically, I’m not sure the answer to this question matters.

But, just to play along, I don’t think its true that there are more throws coming from LF than from RF. So no, I think the idea that the better arm in RF, given two players with equal range, is correct.

  7. David* on September 29th, 2006 8:52 pm

    Dave,

So is speed the biggest factor of what OF position should be filled by which player?

  8. Dave on September 29th, 2006 8:53 pm

Hendu just announced that Padilla’s pitch count doesn’t matter because “those slow curveballs don’t take anything out of your arm.”

Honestly, if I was forced to work with this guy, I’d probably have thrown him out of the booth at some point this year. Literally throw him out of the booth.

  9. Dave on September 29th, 2006 8:54 pm

So is speed the biggest factor of what OF position should be filled by which player?

Range, not speed. Coco Crisp is fast, but is not a good outfielder.

Speed is certainly part of range, but it isn’t range in and of itself.

  10. _MFAN_ on September 29th, 2006 8:55 pm

    105, Hendu finishing strong.

seriously Hnedu if that was the case Moyer could pitch 9 innings every start no matter what.

  11. David* on September 29th, 2006 8:56 pm

    Range, ok.

So OF with best range in CF I assume. Then from there do you think it matters who plays LF/RF?

  12. apunetid on September 29th, 2006 8:57 pm

5 out 6 of Padilla’s Ks have come with two men on.

  13. Coach Owens on September 29th, 2006 8:57 pm

Arm strength must not matter I mean just 2004 and last year we had Randy Winn in center and he has a terrible arm.

Reasons to watch the Ms next year:
    1. Hargrove
    2. Hendu
    3. Valle
    4. Rizzs

  15. Dave on September 29th, 2006 9:06 pm

So OF with best range in CF I assume. Then from there do you think it matters who plays LF/RF?

It depends on the configuration of your home park. I happen to think that the giant gap in left center at Safeco should have the Mariners playing their second best range guy in left, and hiding their worst defensive outfielder (Ibanez, currently) in right.

  16. Dave on September 29th, 2006 9:09 pm

For instance, if Ibanez didn’t run like he was carrying a fleet of pianos, that ball doesn’t get to the wall.

  17. IdahoInvader on September 29th, 2006 9:10 pm

Watching the brutal pitching of Fruto, just makes me appreciate Soriano and Lowe even more than already did…sigh

  18. dnc on September 29th, 2006 9:11 pm

Anyone hear that Lowe is having exploratory arthroscopic surgery?

  19. _MFAN_ on September 29th, 2006 9:11 pm

113- Man, it almost makes me appreciate Mateo.

  20. David* on September 29th, 2006 9:14 pm

Great. Now I have topless Hendu stuck in my brain.

  21. Coach Owens on September 29th, 2006 9:34 pm

    Fruto sucks.

  22. kg on September 29th, 2006 9:49 pm

Snelling looks completely lost at the plate.

  23. Dave in Palo Alto on September 29th, 2006 9:50 pm

    That killed the thread.

    Or maybe Corco passed out.

  24. _MFAN_ on September 29th, 2006 9:56 pm

    Dave, DMZ or anyone:

what are the chances Huber makes the team next year? He has to have a leg up on Green, Fruto, O’Flaherty and probably a few others.

  25. David* on September 29th, 2006 9:58 pm

    Joel. Sigh.

  26. LB on September 29th, 2006 9:59 pm

I thought the conventional wisdom was that you put the better arm in RF because that guy has to make two long throws (to home and 3rd), but there is only one long throw coming from LF (to home).

I thought the conventional wisdom was also that you had to but the strong arm in RF to try to prevent more runners from going from 1st to 3rd on singles to the outfield.

  27. David J. Corcoran I on September 29th, 2006 10:02 pm

Jeezus. I leave the thread for an hour and the game goes to hell.

  28. Coach Owens on September 29th, 2006 10:03 pm

    Curse of Corco!

  29. _MFAN_ on September 29th, 2006 10:04 pm

    Joel in..game over.

    Raul is good.

  34. David* on September 29th, 2006 10:22 pm

Wait. Did I kill the game thread twice in one night?

    I sorry 🙁

  35. _MFAN_ on September 29th, 2006 10:24 pm

    128-No, Fruto killed it.

  36. LB on September 29th, 2006 10:24 pm

Like there won’t be more garbage time this weekend…

  37. msb on September 29th, 2006 10:48 pm

sigh. Fruto came in, just about the same time the temperature dropped a good 10-15 degrees. Made for a swell evening at the ballpark….

OMG, Ibanez has been outstanding in left field?

well, he has been out standing in left field.

    Wow, a game thread with about 3% game comments—but many remarks regarding beverage composition. . . . I’ts September under .500. Again. : (

    Finally, my first post.

I just got back from the game not too long ago. I really want to believe that these guys will be good next year instead of mediocre. However, mediocre is better than bad…and so I will pay $7 for a bleacher seat.

The M’s Team Store was having a sale outisde on the concourse during the game tonight. Most of the stuff was, eh, so-so. HOWEVER, they were selling JEFF CIRILLO magnets for 10 cents apiece!

    I bought two!

I gave one to my friend Matt, who appreciated it.

This was one of the better parts of the game. The other was our impressions of Hargrove strategizing…complete with crazy, mad scientist laughter. “I will put in….OSWALDO NAVARRO! It is what they’ll expect least….MUAHAHAHAHAHAH!”

    And so on.

    Hello everyone…

I don’t know how good they will be overall next season, but the team is going in the right direction. There are many reasons to be optmistic despite Hargrove coming back.
Managment seems committed to a good core of young players like Lopez, Betancourt, Snelling, Felix and Lowe. Obviously a lot can happen between now and the 2007 season, but I am looking forward to a very good team next season.

I’m hoping, hoping, hoping for a good team. I have always kinda pulled for the Mariners in the AL West, even when I was living back home in Oklahoma and watching my dad pull for the Angels.

I moved out here in ’03, the last 90 win season. I completely fell in love with the team in ’04 during the first 90-loss season.

I’ve actually gotten my dad to switch teams from the Angels to the M’s…this after I took him on the Safeco Tour when he was out here in March and told him about Yuni, Jose, and the potential Good Pickup of Joh.

He now proudly wears a Kenji shirt around the small town in which I grew up in Oklahoma.

I hope that the M’s are a good team next season not only for the sake of the Good M’s fans, but also for my Dad who is going to come out in June specifically so we can catch a series together.

Oh, and then there’s that being competative thing. A minor detail, really.

Feierabend’s name should be easy to spell in future threads and stop comments from being deleted unnecessarily. Because, when you break his name down, any baseball fan should be able to remember it:

Fei-ERA-bend. “Fei’s ERA is around the bend!”

And there you have it. (It’s kind of like how I visualize Joel Pineiro on the mound as a big pine tree ptching so I can remember his name, which, thankfully, I will no longer have to do!)
