Game 123, Mariners at Angels

DMZ · August 19, 2006 at 6:27 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

7 o’clock. Ooh, here’s the thing to break a losing streak: an angry former player facing the team that wouldn’t cough up a sufficently large contract! The Angels are hitting .265/.324/.423 against left-handers this year – not far off their season average.

Hargrove has, it seems, stepped back from the abyss of previous insane lineups, which may help:
RF-L Ichiro
2b-R Lopez
3b-R Beltre
LF-L Ibanez
1b-R Sexson
C-R Johjima
DH-L Broussard
SS-R Betancourt
CF-R Jones

A relatively rare #6 spot for Johjima. Snelling is benched as a reward for his success in the last two games.

For real lineup flux, though, check out the Angels
CF Figgins
3B Izturis
SS Cabrera
RF Guerrero
LF Rivera
DH Anderson
1B Quinlan
2B Kendrick
C Napoli

Today’s CF Figgins started at second. Kendrick, at second, started at first yesterday. Their left fielder moves to DH, the DH moves to RF, RF moves to LF.

  6. DMZ on August 19th, 2006 10:12 pm

Help us, Chris Snelling, you’re our only hope.

  7. JI on August 19th, 2006 10:14 pm

    WHAT THE FUCK!!!???!!!

  8. LB on August 19th, 2006 10:14 pm

I hate K-Rod. Dude acts like he’s never saved a game every time he does it.

  9. G-Man on August 19th, 2006 10:14 pm

That last one was high, and you have to swing when you’re a rookie.

  10. Jar on August 19th, 2006 10:15 pm

    or not.

Rick Reed must’ve been dumped by Chris Snelling’s mom in high school or something

    FUCK YOU, UMP.

    Motherfucking Snakes on a Plane!

  14. Bender on August 19th, 2006 10:17 pm

How the hell can youcall those three pitches strikes?

  15. Dave in Palo Alto on August 19th, 2006 10:24 pm

18 motherfucking hits and another motherfucking loss.

  16. Josh on August 19th, 2006 10:28 pm

I feel sorry for the guy. Snelling, that is.

You take six balls in a row, as you rightly ought, and the umpire calls you out.

The only one even close was the first ‘strike’ and even that was legitimately outside. A major league umpire should not call a pitch 6-8 inches outside a strike, nor a breaking pitch 8 inches high after being framed a strike.

Way to reinforce in Snelling that the Mariners’ philosophy of hacking is the best way to go! 🙁

  17. LB on August 19th, 2006 10:28 pm

#309: That last one was high, and you have to swing when you’re a rookie.

    Absolutely.

It amazes me how quickly Kevin Youlikis started getting those “respect” calls from umpires. Maybe they read that book Billy Beane wrote or something.

I hate “respect” calls, whether for pitchers or hitters.

  18. stoopidmunkey13 on August 19th, 2006 10:29 pm

so we swing at pitches that arnt strikes…and take pitches that are called strikes…

    theres always pre season football!

  19. msb on August 19th, 2006 10:29 pm

ok, so having missed virtually the entire game, what were the complaints with Reed & Guccione? well, ok, I saw the final AB with Doyle, the one where he kept trying to take his walk to 1st, but what happened (again) with Guccione, one of my all time favorite umps?

  20. DMZ on August 19th, 2006 10:30 pm

As much as Snelling got jobbed and I’m livid about it, I think maybe Tschida rang him up as much for running to first twice as for the borderline location of the last pitch.

    Which is still bullshit.

  21. Josh on August 19th, 2006 10:32 pm

At least he’s here, though. I’d take this in Seattle over his winning a triple crown in Tacoma. He’s been doing well so far, too. If he keeps doing his thing, perhaps others will catch on as to how hitting should be approached by major leaguers.

Perhaps then we won’t have this funk again.

Shame he can’t teach the pitchers, though.

  22. dw on August 19th, 2006 10:33 pm

The last one was a strike. The other two were Eric Gregg (RIP) strikes.

What a deathmarch this last week has been.

I think so too. You’re right, it isn’t right.

Even if he didn’t have a legitimate reason to go to first on the first two (i.e., they were half a foot outside), again, a major league umpire, or any one, doesn’t have the right to change his strikes because he feels the guy was showing him up – Which obviously wasn’t the case, anyway.

  24. adamt on August 19th, 2006 10:35 pm

    To quote Bull Durham:

“Well fuck this fucking game!… I fucking quit!”

Went onto MLB’s Gameday to see the pitch location on Snelling:

That first strike wasn’t even charted close to being low. 2nd, right on the low/inside corner (the one pitch I thought was a strike). The 3rd, charted belt high… whatever.

  25. LB on August 19th, 2006 10:37 pm

#318: so we swing at pitches that arnt strikes…and take pitches that are called strikes…

You struck gold there: pitches that are called strikes.

If you and I agree to call a horse a cow, that doesn’t make it a cow. And those pitches to Snelling were definitely not strikes.

  26. msb on August 19th, 2006 10:37 pm

hmm, a team that has lost 9 games in a row finally has the tying run on base, and the hitter in the box shows he is eager to get to 1st, to keep the inning going. yup, time to punish him.

so what happened with Guccione & Beltre? and damn, that means Guccione is the ump at home for Jake Woods tomorrow.

  27. Josh on August 19th, 2006 10:37 pm

Doesn’t Gameday ‘paint’ it on the corner/edge if an ump calls it a strike? I’ve never seen a called strike that showed up outside the box. 😉

Could have been some before, but I’ve never seen one.

  28. Zero Gravitas on August 19th, 2006 10:38 pm

Snelling is really impressive. Yeah he probably should have swung at the last one with 2 strikes, but his at-bats are incredibly refreshing to watch. His approach sticks out like a sore thumb in this lineup. Basically he just worked 3 walks in one at-bat. That’s more than the rest of the team had all night.
Also I hate to keep bringing this up, but the M’s pitchers need to start throwing at somebody. That K-Rod is freaking intolerable. I think this is actually a case where Mateo could be useful. He can’t pitch worth a damn, but I think he’s pretty accurate when he wants to hit somebody.

  29. Bender on August 19th, 2006 10:39 pm

I agree with Derek. I think the Imp was kinda pissed that Doyle started running twice and I think that’s utter shit.

  30. LB on August 19th, 2006 10:40 pm

#324: You don’t really think MLB Gameday gets those pitch locations from Questec, do you? It’s done by some retiree with a mouse in his hand watching TV in the pressbox.

You might as well draw dots on a piece of paper in your own house to get pitch locations.

  31. daveblev on August 19th, 2006 10:40 pm

Annoying that Rex Hudler kept referring to Snelling as a rookie..when he has been up before in previous years. I can’t believe this is happening…the D-Rays beat the A’s Friday night, so I can say I honestly believe the Mariners will lose every game they have left this season.

Snelling was robbed of a walk…I’m sure Grover will be bench him for two weeks now for that…urggh, I hate Grover…good to see Jones playing although he’s not ready.

That picture on the wall that was rattling and with the wall shaking, that explains why Willie has back spasms…his teammates were taking turns throwing him into the wall since he’s just horrible.

    Mariners Myspace

New M’s slogan: Mariners Baseball…You Gotta Loathe Those Guys.

  32. Josh on August 19th, 2006 10:41 pm

A four-day suspension would be soooo delicious.

Maybe if they could prove it was intention it would be for even longer! I’ll gladly join the investigative team.

  33. pablothegreat on August 19th, 2006 10:42 pm

324: You thought the 2nd pitch of Snelling’s final AB was a strike? That pitch was the worst of the bunch.

  34. Josh on August 19th, 2006 10:43 pm

#324: You don’t really think MLB Gameday gets those pitch locations from Questec, do you? It’s done by some retiree with a mouse in his hand watching TV in the pressbox.

Of course not. Gameday wouldn’t want Schilling to take out its broadcast means when he got pissed!

  35. John in L.A. on August 19th, 2006 10:45 pm

None of those three pitches, including the last one, had been called strikes all night.

Fuck him. I was already pissed at the ridiculous call on Beltre at first.

I mean, the team is setting friggin’ records for losing, they don’t need your ump testosterone bullshit on top of everything else.

And screw Hargrove, too. Barely making a fuss while the team gets screwed. You don’t have to be Lou, but for god’s sake, don’t make it easy on them.

  36. pablothegreat on August 19th, 2006 10:45 pm

Oops, in 333 I meant 2nd strike and not 2nd pitch.

  37. LB on August 19th, 2006 10:46 pm

Beltre was safe at first because the 1st baseman jumped to receive the throw and never got back to the bag nor tagged the runner. Guccione called him out.

Guccione tossed David Wells from a game last year when Guccione was umping at second base because Wells turned his back to the home plate umpire and muttered something under his breat about the quality of the balls and strikes calls that day. Guccione is apparently a gifted lip reader, although we learned tonight he cannot see well enough to know when a baserunner is safe at first.

Last year the excuse was that he was a minor league umpire called up to fill in for a vacationing MLB ump. How he got the fulltime gig this year, I have no idea.

    Re #330:

No, I didn’t say anything of the sort. Just wanted to see where they’d plot it. Amusing to say the least.

    Re: #334:

    Yes, really.

  39. LB on August 19th, 2006 10:52 pm

#334: They don’t let Schilling have bats anymore. That was an NL-thing.

  40. pensive on August 19th, 2006 11:05 pm

#328– Exactly correct with regards to hitting batters or pitching inside. High and tight seems a lost concept to Ms’ pitchers. Bobby Mads was great for that. The Mariners appear to be soft. On the other hand Hargrove is a great iinterview

Hargrove should have argued that last strike so vigriously that he got thrown out for Sunday’s game.

  41. msb on August 19th, 2006 11:06 pm

#337– nah, Guccione’s been part of Tschida’s crew for a while. He was the ump in 2004 who almost got (of all people) Dan Wilson tossed from a game… “Wilson called time to talk to Moyer, and Guccione followed him toward the mound. Soon, the two were jawing, and when Melvin rushed out to join the fray, he quickly earned his second thumb of the season. “

  42. LB on August 19th, 2006 11:14 pm

    #341:
This says the porn scion is still a AAA ump. These are the only tenured MLB umps.

Perhaps he’s like a “permatemp” was at Microsoft 10 years ago.

  43. msb on August 19th, 2006 11:22 pm

could be– all I know is, he leaves chaos and destruction in his wake. For entertainment sometime, google him and see just how many times he’s tossed someone (after barking at them), especially when they have the nerve to disagree with his wandering strike zone….

  44. JeffS on August 19th, 2006 11:47 pm

There sure was some funny calls against us… it’s hard to say whether it cost us the game, but it certainly makes getting out of this funk that much more difficult.

  45. Replacement level poster on August 20th, 2006 12:54 pm

I like how the defensive chart said just “Chris”.
