Game 79, Mariners at Diamondbacks

DMZ · June 28, 2006 at 5:52 pm · Filed Under Mariners

39-39 with a shot to go over (over!) .500, and Felix on the mound… how sweet is this? And the guy we’re facing is Ed Gonzalez. Ed Gonzalez? Ha. He sucked when he was up in 2004, he sucked in 2005, and he’s not so hot this year either (don’t go look up his minor league numbers, I’m being intentionally oblivious here). They should smack this guy around for a couple innings to kick of Melvin’s Crazy World of Bullpens.

40-39. It’d be nice.

we may agree, but the All Star manager is Ozzie Guillen, and Ozzie loves his second baseman, and feels he was the MVP of the Sox last season…

As I understand, the manager doesn’t have a whole lot of say these days now that there are all of those player votes to determine backup spots, but I guess I’m not sure if they go to that for injury replacements. Another possibility if they are short on 2B, is just to load up on SS who can also play 2B.

And actually, glancing at VORP and WARP numbers from this season, and the last half of 2005, I think you could make a reasonable case for Iguchi over Lopez for this year. I’m not too worried if Lopez doesn’t make it this year, he’ll be there keeping Felix company at some point in the future.

Tom Verducci (of SI) named his All Star starrters today and included Lopez

#227: SABR convention started today (just the business meeting) and the presentations and such start tomorrow. But I’ve been to one of these before, and there won’t be any of that ‘hey baby, didn’t I see you at SABR’ going on. (It made me laugh heartily to imagine it though).

I counted, and out of the preliminary registrants for the convention (as of May 18) there were like 450 people registered, and 49 of them were women.

The Seattle Times article this morning said registration is up to 600 now though, so I don’t know whether the woman % stayed around 10% or dropped dramatically.

I’m one of the 49. But the committee meetings and presentations I attend are generally NOT the statistical analysis ones; I’m more into the Business of Baseball, Minor League, and Scouts committees.

So anyone heading to the Friday night Ms game, or the Saturday night Rainiers game, who is looking to find the geekiest of baseball geeks, well, SABR will be out in full force for both. You can stalk Bill James (or Steve Gietscher of Sporting News, or Alan Schwartz of Baseball America, or…..) if you’re able to pick them out of the crowd!

Is anybody else here going? I had an extra ticket to the keynote speaker (Jim Bouton) and awards luncheon that I almost offered up, but my former prof bought it off me today.

Does Felix look good because we are playing well? And what has got in to our boyss heads. Damn.

I don’t fear anybody at the moment

Felix looked good because he was pitching a little smarter tonight. While he didn’t have the control of his changeup like he normally does, he never gave up on it and kept throwing it. Only 4 strikeouts in 7 innings pitched but 13 groundball outs. He wasn’t dominating, but this is what the King should be doing every 5th day, if not better.

I would call this an “average” Felix performance because I have seen him throw better and I have seen him throw worse.

    Groundball outs are valuable.

At Jays games, fans hang ‘G’s from the railing when Halladay pitches. GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGroundout. Like that.
