Minor League Baseball on TV

I’m flipping through the channels just now, and I notice the Hudson Valley Renegades are on local television. The Renegades are Tampa Bay’s entry in the short-season New York-Penn League — equivalent to the AquaSox in the Northwest League. Wouldn’t it be cool if the AquaSox were on TV now and then, maybe when the M’s have an off-day? Anyway, just a random thought.
Also, the showed Bill Murray sitting in the stands, and I was like, “Hey, that’s Bill Murray.” Turns out he owns the team. Whaddya know.
The sports package I’ve got with my Charter Cable I’ve got a whole crap load of Fox Sports. I’ll get the Random Minor League games now and then again, I got the Missions game which Clemens started in his rehab. And a Frontier League game as well.
As someone who attended college in the Hudson Valley, all I can say is: THE AREA IS NOT WORTH VISITING.
Were you watching YES? When I was in Cooperstown four years ago I was astonished by the sheer amount of baseball on YES. Well, that and the 100 hours of Yogi Berra.
No, it wasn’t on YES. If anything, I’d think YES would show the Staten Island Yankees. This was Renegades v. Brooklyn Cyclones (the Mets’ entry). YES does show a ton of baseball, though. Yankees, Yankees replays, Yankees stories… it’s downright sickening.
Where’d you go, sankthetank? Marist? Vassar? Bard? CIA? SUNY New Paltz? That’s all I can think of for the moment. I don’t mind the Hudson Valley so much–though the summer humidity is terrible–but I’m definitely looking forward to moving back to Seattle.
I’m a former Marist kid. The Renegades are a good watch sometimes.
I got pulled out of the stands once to participate in the “stroller derby” and I accidentally pulled the head off my African-American baby doll while trying to pull him out of his stroller. I got booed and called a racist from the stands and the PA announcer called me “a clown.”
And that moment was the very best the Hudson Valley had to offer me. Sankthetank is right. You’re not missing much.
My friend Jorge (lives in Lacey) and has Direct TV or something, and a few weeks ago (June 3rd to be exact) he called me to tell me a Tacoma Rainiers game was being broadcast. He knew I’d be jealous.
Do you think it’d hurt or help the Ms to allow their minor league teams to broadcast in this area? Take away viewership? As long as the local farm clubs are Mariners farm teams, it might actually promote interest in the entire franchise, but I doubt they think like that.
JMB, I’m a recent grad of RPI, located in (not so beautiful) Troy, NY. Basically it’s right outside of Albany, the northern boundary of the Hudson Valley. I will give the area this, though: it’s close to Boston, Montreal, and NYC (3 truly amazing cities; all for different reasons) and very close to Cooperstown. That and the nature is great — not unlike western WA.
Not missing much? Well, I am here (in the HV, I mean). So I’m getting all there is to miss.
