You mean like how Bavasi kept Melvin and then nuked him after a year, because he wasn’t really his guy? I agree it (a GM inheriting a manager) happens all the time; I just question the wisdom of it. It does two things that are bad: First, it creates an insecure manager who may alter his approach to please his new boss he wasn’t chosen by, and second, it gives the new GM a built-in excuse and a “mulligan” if the team loses. I just see it as a much better scenario to let a GM pick his manager as they are more apt to help each other succeed since they are tied to one another.
