M’s get new BP jerseys!

DMZ · December 8, 2005 at 12:58 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Now at least during batting practice there’s a new look for the team. I’m sure this will placate everyone disappointed by the lack of big moves so far. They sure are spiffy.

This may be a marketing play: if enough people immediately buy a new jersey, they’ll sign Millwood.

Also, note that Joel Pineiro gets his name spelled wrong in the caption — and that’s on the team website!

I think it’s funny that they had a pitcher modeling the batting practice jersey.

Maybe it’s because Joel is basically an over paid batting practice pitcher.

“Fans, Joel Pineiro here. I love the new batting practice jersey! And you know I know batting practice — I throw it every fifth game!”

  3. jtopps on December 8th, 2005 1:04 pm

Joel looking a little like Matt Morris there. Hopefully this means Joel will fulfill the quota of overpaid, bearded pitcher for 2006.

    No more teal!!

  5. Deanna on December 8th, 2005 1:08 pm

Isn’t it more important to note that you can see Willie Bloomquist and Dan Wilson hanging out in select team stores wearing the jersey in the upcoming week? Wheeeee!

  6. chris w on December 8th, 2005 1:17 pm

No. 4 – Agreed. The teal has got to go.

  7. Johnny on December 8th, 2005 1:31 pm

    Yeah teal was so mid-90’s

  8. JustaFun on December 8th, 2005 1:37 pm

Pretty ugly in a I hate teal sort of ugly.

  9. troy on December 8th, 2005 1:45 pm

I don’t understand why they’re bringing the “Mariners green” back to a point of emphasis. I thought we had moved past that. *sigh*

And the irony of an M’s pitcher modeling the BP jersey is priceless. Misspelling his name makes it even better. Unintentional comedy at its finest.

They also spell Piñeiro’s name wrong in the promo at Safeco in which they ask fans to spell his name. One fan proceeds to spell it correctly, using “ñ” instead of “n” (as it is spelled on his jersey), and the buzzer sounds for an incorrect spelling.

Let’s see… its a BATTING practice jersey, and the models are Joel Pineiro (a pitcher) Willie “F” Bloomquist (who can’t hit) and Dan Wilson (who’s retired.) Couldn’t they have, at least, had somebody who hit above 250 model ’em?

  12. King Dog on December 8th, 2005 2:24 pm

And, as Andrew mentioned, teal? Does this mean the “Mean Green” caps are on the way back, too? Or at least those gawdawful caps with the teal bill?

  13. Shoeless Jose on December 8th, 2005 2:36 pm

There may be an attractive shade of teal but the Mariners have never found it (nor, to be frank, have I. And stop calling me frank). I do wish they’d shift their primary shade of blue to something that doesn’t look so black on TV. Hey, if they must have teal, how about blue with really thin teal pinstripes? Really thin, as in too thin to see without magnifcation thin?

I don’t know, perhaps teal correlates to winning percentage. The teal will continue until the team improves.

This must mean Griffey is coming back.

  15. Russ on December 8th, 2005 2:54 pm

    hideous

  16. Frinklin on December 8th, 2005 2:55 pm

God help me, but I have to admit to this: I loved the teal caps. I still have on my closet. I even miss the teal jerseys. I wish they’d bring them back every once in awhile.

I understand this may mean there is something wrong with me.

  17. Frinklin on December 8th, 2005 3:42 pm

Er… That should read “I still have ONE IN my closet”

    D’oh.

WTF? Next comes the announcement that the M’s will blow-up Safeco so that they can build a dome.

  19. Evan on December 8th, 2005 4:24 pm

Except the new dome will be in Snohomish County, and thus will be the Snohomer Dome. For retro feel, it’s on-field dimensions will match those of the old Polo Grounds. 280′ down the lines. 460′ to dead center. With 20′ walls.

This is a total hijack, but [deleted, ot]

  21. Cole on December 8th, 2005 4:40 pm

I don’t mind the teal jerseys, they remind me of the Griffey days. And for me that was the most time I’ve had being a Mariner fan. (1992-present)

  22. Cole on December 8th, 2005 4:42 pm

    most fun*

I should really proofread before I hit submit.

  23. Daniel Carroll on December 8th, 2005 4:49 pm

The old teal unis are better than the near-black alternates they wear now….

Says the guy who frequents a sports logos message board.

  24. RickL on December 8th, 2005 6:01 pm

Why the F do they need separate batting practice jerseys?

  25. Dave in Palo Alto on December 8th, 2005 6:17 pm

Was that Good Joel or Bad Joel in the picture?

  26. lefty on December 8th, 2005 6:47 pm

It’s kind of a throw back to the pukey Teal of 1995. While I am the proud owner of an authentic Bob Wolcott Teal Game Jersey, I think the teal needs to go to someplace faraway.

Maybe the teal shoulders are an attempt to distract or disorient the pitcher.

They should bring back the trident for the BP Jerseys. Even if it was a teal Trident on a Navy background, I would be all over that.

#24: Why the F do they need separate batting practice jerseys?

Because fans who have already bought home, road, and “alternate home” M’s jerseys might still have some money to spend? That’d be my guess.

That new Mariner BP jersey looks a little like a pajama top. lol.

How about sheer nighties for the Mariners’ ballgirls?
