Draft Q&A on Thursday
As I mentioned previously, Patrick Ebert has graciously agreed to spend an hour chatting about the draft here, and we’ve set our first draft chat up with Patrick for Thursday night at 5 pm pacific time. Patrick is a staff writer for Perfect Game USA, the premier high school talent showcase association in the country. He’s also one of the main authors of Brewerfan.net, and maintains the best free source of draft information all in one place.
He’s a great source of information, so bring your questions about draft eligible players on Thursday and hear what he has to say. I’ll open up a moderated thread Thursday night, where all comments will go into a queue before they hit the site, and then I’ll release them one by one, much like the chats you’ll see at ESPN, Prospectus, and Baseball America. I’d like to know his opinion on how deep this draft is in catchers, and the likelihood of the M’s getting 1-2 premier or at least decent prospects there. We’ve discussed before on this site how the M’s are weak organizationally at that position, and I would rank it #2 in importance in building a team, only behind pitching.
Would love to hear your thoughts on Trevor Crowe and who you think might draft him.
Would love to hear about Justin Upton. And what Patrick Ebert thinks of Gammons alluding his throwing in the same breath as Ankiel, Sax, etc.. in a recent column w/o actually naming Justin.
Three questions:
How likely is John Mayberry Junior to sign if drafted?
In your opinion, who is the best left handed pitcher available in the draft?
In your opinion, who is the best corner infielder available in the draft?
If Gordon and Upton remain the top two talents going into the draft, what are the chances that one “falls” to the Mariners at #3 due to asking price or some other reason?

Knowing High School programs as well as you do, how much are professional concepts like batter’s eye and controllable pitching factors (SO’s,BB’s,HR’s) being coached at that level? Or is it all about tools development (throwing, hitting, running) in order to attract scouts?

How well does Alex Gordon project in left field (since if the M’s draft him there’s a good chance that’s where he’d have to play)?
If Upton and Gordon go 1-2, who would you take #3?
Where would you select Stephen Drew and Jared Weaver, and how much $$$ do you think it will take to sign each of them?
Re: (# 4) JOHN MAYBERRY’s Signability – This is the first I’ve heard about the possibility of his not signing. (I realize that he still has leverage–a fourth year of college–but I hadn’t heard that he might not sign.)
What is your information? Citation?
He could demand too much money, etc. I have no grounds to base this on, which is why I asked the question.
I can’t post on Thursday, but here is a question I would like to ask:
What is your opinion of Cameron Maybin? Do you think that he can play CF in the big leagues? And do you see him continuing to be a switch hitter? Also, how does he rate compared to Upton? I know that Upton is rated higher by most people, but can Maybin pass him with a huge year?
Considering the M’s second pick is not until the 4th round, are there any Matt Tuiasosopo-like candidates for that pick — seemingly college-bound high school prospects with 1st round talent who might change their mind when offered a substantial bonus?
