Game 132, Yankees at Mariners

Jeff · August 31, 2005 at 6:17 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

The dust is settling around my house. Boards and plaster have settled down like warm snowflakes, and a new room is taking shape.

We’re doing a tradition long enjoyed by my favorite baseball team, the end-of-summer remodel.

Remodeling inherently involves destruction, sometimes painful. You throw away a part that’s outlived its usefulness, you tear down a section of your life. Some good always goes out with the bad, and if the old poker table doesn’t fit the updated room, well, that’s a hardship.

It’s the same with baseball, where a beloved chapter has to end so the fresh start can spring up. If you’re fortunate, time stops enough to let you see the great times of the previous era just as you sense those thrilling, emerging possibilities.

It’s in this mood that I go to watch Felix Hernandez take on Randy Johnson. Two aces, two eras, two baseball teams in different stages of transition.

One special end-of-summer night. Enjoy.

I’m still debating on whether to buy a Felix jersey. It would be cool, but $200 is steep for something of no practical value. And the thought that some of that money goes to Franklin’s salary makes me vomit.

If the Kulpa did get fooled by Felix’s stuff tonight, it probably won’t be the last time.

Don’t worry, the jersey money goes to Felix’s next contract. I promise.

Thanks, but my taste in women, limited though it may be, would definitely not run towards someone like Mrs Lima. Angelina Jolie, now…

Felix so far: 1.84 ERA over 51 innings.

577: Yeah, if your talking about the Sheffield walk in the first IIRC the last “ball” of the AB was what I thought a change right over the heart of the playe. Ofcourse I’m not really opposed to walking Sheff with 2 outs, no on, as there were much worse places that ball could have been deposited if he had swung. That man frightens me. I think its the bat wiggling. It gets to me man . . .

Good point, Lauren, Felix’s ERA hadn’t been mentioned yet. It was kind of scary there for an inning (after Sheff’s HR) when it was over 2. Everything’s okay again now.

Looks like the Angels just finished off the A’s. It’s too bad Crosby went on the DL, I was kind of looking forward to seeing him when the A’s come to Seattle.

If a 19 year old can K 8 major leaguers in a game, I think we can dig up 8 extra posts. You gotta reach down deep. Who gets called up when rosters expand? Do they officially respond tomorrow (today for us east coasters)?

That’s it, I’m weeding this thread.

Bobby Crosby, SS, .830 OPS this season, fields well but sub-Betancourt. He won rookie of the year last year. Hopefully, this start helps Felix towards his goal of two ROYs in one year.

The endall of Mrs. Lima links. For those of you familar with BTF they put togethor a wikipedia (named after our very own lazy catcher) that explains all their FAQs. The link has a small description of why there are usually 2 pictures associated with her (one with her and jose and one with her missing). A pretty fun site to (JJ?) putz around with.

Is there a minimum-innings limit for pitchers to be eligible for Rooke of the Year? I know Felix will pitch too much to qualify for 2006…

575– I bet they know who Felix is. Kulpa is also a vet, and he may tend to favor a vet, it wouldn’t be the first time an ump has. Frankly, I can’t recall what his rep is as a balls & strikes guy, but I do recall he was once charged by Burnitz one Mets/Yankee game….

I see by consulting my Free Mariners/Verizon calendar (Mr. August was Pokey… Mr. September? Dan Wilson) that the showdown between Joel and NoNeck is a radio-only daygame tomorrow

    “What the hell is happening?”

I believe DMZ is taking out the trash. The kids have been acting up while the ‘rents were gone.

Methinks the hosts are cutting out a few padded messages….

Anyway….still a good game by Felix…and the HRs given up are something I think he’ll learn to cut down on…

(Though I think folks can be more nuanced on their thinking; it isn’t a binary world out there…)

  16. Mat on August 31st, 2005 10:22 pm

Matt, I haven’t heard anyone say anything official about it, but I can’t imagine there’s a minimum anything limit on ROY. Felix would be pushing what the voters might consider a minimum, but it’s pretty much up to them if they want to include him on merit.

The message count is slipping away from us like 75% of our games. Except, come to think of it, more slowly.

I went tonight. Sat in 349, which actually gave a pretty nice view. (I think those were some of the only seats left… attendance was 46000+.)

IMHO, Felix got some bad calls. But the offense sucked as usual. Next time, I’ll bring a book to read while they’re whiffing away.
