Game 103, Indians at Mariners

Jeff · July 30, 2005 at 12:56 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

The approaching trade deadline is the talk of the comments. The below thread’s for that, while this one you can use to to talk about the (non-televised) battle between C.C. Sabathia and Ryan Franklin.

Alternatively, you can gleefully watch the Yankees’ bullpen vaporlock against the Angels. Who knows? You might even see someone get pulled out of the clubhouse and sent to the airport.

    why i hate hargrove #1

this could also be titled why most big league managers are jackasses

Mike Hargrove, as near as i can tell, believes that there is a rule in baseball that closers are never allowed to come in unless it is the 9th inning. Never. Under no circumstances. Even if the game is on the line, the bottom of the other teams order is due up in the 9th, there are 2 outs, and your closer hasnt worked in days. Even if his nickname is “everyday eddie.” 3 times in the past week (tues, thurs, sat) the Ms were winning or tied in the top of the 8th. 3 times the opposition put men on base, but we had one or two outs. twice we brought in Ron Villone, once to face a switch hitter, and once to face what would be a right handed pinch hitter. Twice Villone blew the game. For some reason, at no point in any of these 3 games did Hargrove consider bringing in Guardado. Even though, on thursday, he brought Guardado in to pitch the 9th after we were LOSING. If he was going to get Guardado some work anyway, why not bring in you “stopper” in the games most critical situation which happened to be with 2 outs in the 8th, the score tied, and a runner in scoring position? He made the same mistake twice, it cost us wins twice, and today, it very well could have been a disaster, but the gods intervened. Your closer is your best reliever, why not bring him in when the game is on the line.

    that is all

What a great game. Ichiro with two dingers including the gamewinner. A sweet and classy revenge.

Derek, you have my sympathy for your antipathy to Van Morrison. He is like an Ichiro in pop music — extremely and uniquely talented. Please remember that when someone tells you they don’t like Ichiro.

And Corco, you don’t GET dates with Van Morrison music. When you find a keeper, you play Van to make your time together FEEL like a date.

Van Morrison an Ichiro of pop music.

That is probably the weirdest comparison I’ve ever read here.

Picked up from the ESPN recap of the game:

“Suzuki led off the fourth inning with a home run, his eighth this season and the first hit allowed by C.C. Sabathia (6-9). That gave him 1,058 hits in his career, the most ever for a player in his first five seasons, breaking the mark set by Paul Waner from 1926-30.

Waner reached 1,057 hits in 747 games, while Suzuki has played 737 games.”

And the Mariners still have 59 games to go this season!

Villone, also hopefully being showcased for a trade…

    HEY!

I should start charging royalties on “showcasing.”

Paul and Lloyd Waner, the pride of Harrah, Oklahoma.

(About 170 miles west of Spiro.)

And Ichiro’s first homer: 424 feet. Hit about halfway up the windows on the Hit It Here cafe below the neon target.

Were there no upper deck it would have probably left the stadium.

Does anyone know how many pitchers have had arm trouble in the last two years? Reading this mornings TNT Gil was saying he hurt his arm after being told to change his arm motion. Does this mean anything to anyone out there?

Nobody’s going to read this with all the trade threads, but I just have to say: I was looking at the final box score. Indians have 10 hits and 2 runs. Mariners have 4 hits and 3 runs. How often I remember being on the opposite side of numbers like that thinking sheesh what a lot of empty hits! Why can’t the Mariners be that efficient? Nice to see it go the other way once in a while.

Jose – Just to show someone’s paying attention to you 🙂

They owe that to Ichiro’s two dingers. Man, that’s the kind of game I’d like to attend! Although I enjoyed the game after the “feed” as well. I enjoy any game where Jamie pitches a win.

208 – mountain Ernie…if you’re still reading this thread. Type the word “attrition” in the search box on this site. There’s has been, oh about 30 threads devoted to this topic.

It’s late and everyone has gone home, so I’ll share my favorite Van Morrison reference with no one:
“This one is from my latest concept album, ‘Short, Fat, Ignorant Wee Bollock from East Belfast'”.
    Never released.

I was at the game today (drove over from Spokane, watched the game, drove home). Ichiro’s first HR off the Cafe window was HARD hit…much harder than the Softball HR hitters before the game. It was a great game in the sunshine, and there were LOTS of seats available. You should’ve come out!
