BP/USSM at the Park
One of the main comments we heard at last years Pizza Feed was that everyone wanted to do one during the summer and catch a game together. Well, that is officially in the works.
Saturday, July 16th, the Mariners hook up with the Baltimore Orioles at 7 pm. We’re in the planning stages of putting together an event for Baseball Prospectus and U.S.S. Mariner readers. Full details will be forthcoming at a later date, but we are planning on purchasing a large block of tickets for the game. In order to make sure we accurately guage interest in an event like this, we’d like to hear from those of you who are extremely likely to attend. The cost of the outing (still to be determined) will include your ticket to the game.
If you’re fairly certain you’d be able to attend on the 16th, send us an email and let us know how many people you believe you would be bringing with you. This does not guarantee you entrance into the feed. This is simply to guage interest so that we have a general idea of how many tickets to buy. We’d like to be able to accommodate everyone who wants to come, so if you think you can make it to the park on July 16th, drop us a line. The sooner, the better.
And yes, I’m flying out from North Carolina for the event. So no excuses about travel, okay?

According to all the M’s announcers the luxury box below them is available for groups at great rates.
This sounds like great fun and one can only hope it goes extra innings so Jeff breaks that nine Foster barrier. Plus someone should make certain there is a drunk butt-crack exposing fan of Balimore sitting in the sight line.
If we sit in right we have a chance to catch Palmeiro’s homeruns.

One thing about booking large blocks of seats mid-season- they’re likely to put you in that temporary/permanent bleacher section that used to be a cool centerfield gathering spot. You know, the one that covers up the bricks with people’s names on them. I think it was written about rather extensively in these pages before. Anyway that’s where they put my group last year…
On the upside, when you book a group you get on the M’s customer mailing list. Which got us a really cool Christmas card from the Mariners that has Ichiro! on the cover. He’s in the classic pose pointing his bat, which is painted like a candy cane. I was well impressed with that one. It’s still sitting on the mantle, in fact.

Just a note. We’d almost surely be sitting in Section 326 (I’ve reserved a big block of tickets in that section), which is about on line with the 1st-base side on-deck circle, upper deck. I’ve sat there before and it’s a good vantage point that also won’t make you go bankrupt. We’re basically waiting to hear on a couple details from the Mariners, then we can start taking official reservations, reveal more details etc. I can’t promise any cool Ichiro! swag, but the group will have its name on the scoreboard (actually through some archaic rule they insisted we’re only allowed to post Evan’s name–go figure 🙂 ).

Our 16-game plan tickets are in Sec. 328, which are good seats. 326 is one section right of right behind home in the UD.
We already have tickets for Friday; I’ll need to see if dumping that game for Saturday is OK with wife unit. If so, then we’re definitely in. And this will include a precocious year-old girl with a ++ sinker.
Can we have a spelling contest at this pizza fest?

Don’t know where else to post this, but since this is Dave’s thread I thought I would try here. Did I miss discussion of the Wilson Valdez deal for Bumstead and Spiehs? Search turned up nothing. Are they just baggage? What’s the deal with them?

I live in Boise, but for some reason that offer isn’t very tempting.
Like Valdez, they’re waiver fodder, Triple-A arms. They have no value other than throwing innings for the minor league affiliates.

Well, I’ve got my Look Lake trek at the end of the month and the Lavender Run that month too. So looks like it will be beer and bean soup in July instead of wine and chicken but I think I could make the trip over from the Olympic Peninsula for that shindig.

If we are meeting for drinks before the game, I should point out the little Italian place up 1st avenue (Salute, I think?) had $3 Stella Artois pints last I checked. Which means you can have approximately 37 of them for the cost of a Safeco beer.
The Italian food they offered also looked decent as well.

I’m not sure if they’re doing it anymore, but last year Salute had a “Shot and a beer” special for $7. Yes, really. You’d get a pint of Manny’s and then a shot of anything you wanted. They had a couple of top shelf tequilas, including Patron Anejo (which is usually about $10 a shot by itself). And yeah the pizza’s great too — and reasonably priced, $7 or $8. Everything else in there is way overpriced for a pre-game gathering (like $20 or $25 an entree).
Its your lucky day. I can’t attend as I’ll be in Denver. Just my luck the Rockies are on the road every day I’m there so no baseball for me. I’ll be forced to play golf. Well… ‘play’ is a relative term. In my case its more like flogging a perfectly good lawn with a metal stick.
Anyways, have a great time at the game!

The full notice will be posted at baseballprospectus.com (and presumably at ussmariner.com) soon, but if you’d like to get ahead of the curve and haven’t sent your “I’m interested” e-mails yet, please RSVP to seattlefeed@yahoo.com, and indicate exactly how many people will be in your party, plus the full names of everyone attending (for nametag purposes).
Tickets will be $17.50 each, and you’ll be able to buy and print them off your home computer (details on how to follow). There may be an additional charge for room rental at the park–if there is, we’ll let you know.
And I will have a few BP shirts to give out, even if USSm shirts don’t make it.
