Bam!

DMZ · August 31, 2004 at 6:27 pm · Filed Under Mariners

The M’s have scratched their way back into this game, but I don’t think I’ve had a moment that more sums up my feelings about this season than when Boone got thrown out in the top of the fourth.

Bottom of the third: Moyer’s in a battle with an unlikely opponent and then boom, he’s given up four runs. I blink. Moyer? I’ve seen this I don’t know how many times this season, and I still don’t believe it when it happens.

Then top of the fourth, Boone gets thrown out at home by decent margin after being waved around by Dave “Snelling Crippler” Myers. Inning over. Mariners give up four and then run themselves out of an inning.

That’s my season: frustration at the coaching, at the constant stupid little things that go wrong, mixed with disbelief that in a matchup between Moyer and Towers, it was Moyer who got tagged with four runs early in the game.

This team doesn’t need a new manager and a new GM, it needs an entirely new staff with a cadre of exorcists, wiccans, motivational speakers, Feng Shui experts, and whoever else wants to take a crack at chasing these demons away. Ugh.

Jose Lopez is having a nice game. So is Ichiro, but that’s nothing unusual.

I was annoyed at Wave-Em-In Dave, too, but at least there were two outs, unlike last Friday when he sent someone to his doom with NONE away.

I’m not too pleased that Moyer was left in to try to get through the 7th. OTOH, I can’t say that I know that so-and-so from the pen would have been much better. 🙁

Dave Niehaus made one of his patented screw-ups on radio when the M’s double-stole second and third. He had Bucky swiping third, having missed Willie going in to run for him.

    That’s right.

But I like when we are playing Texas.

He called Rafael Soriano “Alfonso Soriano”, REPEATEDLY, and vice versa, REPEATEDLY

He is a great guy, but he can’t do a fly ball either any more.

SWUNG ON AND BELTED and right into the glove of Vernon Wells.

My favorite parts of the game where in the 7th when Winn poached the fly ball away from Ichiro and then Delgado tagged up on first and to beat the throw to second. Neihaus mused on radio that Delgado wouldn’t have even thought once of tagging up had Ichiro been allowed to catch the ball.

The next play was a single to CF where Winn made a wild assed throw to home instead of second which Bucky caught off too late to nail the runner at second. Fairly this time freaked out on TV musing why Winn wasn’t hitting the cutoff man since Delgado was going to make it to home safe all the way.

As for “Snelling Killer”, I think it’s time to give that a rest. Snelling has shown he is as brittle as Brock Huard. You don’t see people calling Holmgren “Brock Killer” do ya? (Not a fan of Myers, btw).

Any game where one of A-Rod’s records (hits in a month) is erased, isn’t too bad.

Yeah, Niehaus and Fairly will call a Mariner on a bad play now and then. OTOH, Rick Rizzs will do the same as soon as H-E-doublehockeysticks goes below zero degrees Centigrade.

I’m glad to see someone else dislikes Dave Myers as much as I.

Yeah, I heard that, when Niehaus claimed it was Bucky who stole the base. 30 seconds later he’s like “oh, that wasn’t Bucky, apparently Willie Bloomquist came in to pinch-run”. Unfortunately calls like that are becoming more and more commonplace this season. Niehaus was one of the best in the business in his prime but I hate to say it he’s really slipped in the last couple of years.

I thought that “Never make the first or last out at home,” was the credo of the third base coach.

And maybe it was my imagination, but I believe at one point tonight, Niehaus was discussing Ichiro breaking A-Rod’s record and couldn’t even get the millennium right.

Shannon, that credo applies to third base. It’s more reasonable to make the last out at home because if the runner stays on third with two outs they’ll need another hit to score them, not always a likely proposition. At third base it’s unreasonable because a runner is in scoring position once he reaches second and therefore doesn’t need to risk being thrown out trying to advance to third.

Myers has to be the worst 3rd base coach in the AL. I remember being in Safeco for the first series against the Rangers with A-Rod. I had seats about 7 rows up from 3rd directly behind Myers. He blew a wave-in call and got Wilson stranded between third and home which, as it turned out, was the difference in the game (Rangers won.)

I was enraged at Myers and screamed at him “What the hell are you doing out there Myers, you jackass? Wake UP, he had NO chance at making it home!”

He kind of turned around with this “aw-shucks” look on his face. That was what, almost 4 years ago and Myers is still regularly half-assing his way through the job. I lived in Chicago the past 4 years and Joey Cora’s doing a stellar job for the Sox. Put Myers on the next train out of town along with Willie “Obligatory Local Yokel” Bloomquist.
