Merry Christmas

Dave · December 25, 2011 at 9:37 am · Filed Under Mariners

For Christmas this year, USSM would like to present you with gifts of not doing things. We would like to offer you no Felix Hernandez trade rumors, a day free of speculation about Prince Fielder, and a lack of doom and gloom about the team’s future. We hope you enjoy freedom from these annoyances.

More seriously, though, enjoy your holiday with friends and family. I’m thrilled to be spending this Christmas at home with my wife, just having gotten out of the hospital on Thursday. Early in the week, it was possible that I’d have to spend this Christmas in the hospital, tied to an IV, but thankfully my immune system recovered on Thursday and I’m able to enjoy this Christmas with loved ones.

In fact, as long as the leukemia doesn’t return, I should be done with hospitalizations entirely. I have one more bone marrow biopsy on January 10th, but if that comes back clean, we’ll go into maintenance mode and reduce my check-up schedule from twice a week to once a month. While there’s still a chance that the leukemia could return (and force unwanted scenarios like a bone marrow transplant), we’re hoping and believing that the four rounds of chemotherapy were effective in beating this thing back, and I plan on living long enough to see this team win again.

Cancer has a nice way of making you appreciate the things you have, but hopefully that perspective can be gained even without a nasty medical diagnosis. For each of us, let’s enjoy what we have, and look forward to many more years of rooting on the Mariners together.

Oh, yeah, I remember Mazel Tov – they called him the Hebrew Hammer. This team could use a guy like him!

Oops, I just broke the rule… sorry!

Happy Christmas to everyone! And Dave, I’m glad you get to be home for Christmas!

Merry Xmas all here at UssM, staff and fellow users. So glad to hear about your cancer Dave and I’m sure you’ll be here for many winning years of Mariners baseball. Here’s to a great new year for all!

Merry Christmas, Dave. It brings so much happiness that you get to be home with the people that you love.

In the 14 months the M’s fans and organization have been hit hard. Losing Dave and Greg. Dave’s cancer. Not enough LL Podcasts. Jerry stealing Larry’s bobblehead. Geoff Baker.

But, seriously, I enter 2012 with a new feeling of hope and belief that we may not be the best team, but we are going to be so much better, younger, and more fun to watch. Dustin Ackley, Justin Smoak, Mike Carp, and Brendan Ryan make me hopeful, and that’s how I want to start this year.

    Dave-
Much like cancer, having a 4 year old teaches you very quickly to remember what an amazing and wonderful world this is… (that was supposed to be funny, the “much like cancer” part).

And this reminder is no more apparent than during Christmas, when he and I were looking up satelite images of where Santa was currently (Nick was in Peru when we decided to go to bed)…

To quote my 4 year old… “But his sleigh is magic, so he could be here any minute…” (running to his room… then running back to give mom a quick hug ‘goodnight’)… “C’mon everybody, we better go to bed or I won’t get any new toys!”

Whoever first said it, was SO right… There really is NO PLACE like home for the holidays…

Glad you got to be there, Dave!

Now we all get to look forward to those baseball-y metaphors about “It’s a New Year!”

    Go M’s.

SCRAPS! DUDE! Good to see you! @ Dave “and I plan on living long enough to see this team win again.” I can’t tell from this whether you have undying faith in Jack Z’s plan/abilities or the future of geriatric medicine! But either way, glad you had a Merry Christmas and hope you have a great 2012!

Scraps and Dave– a merry Christmas indeed ๐Ÿ™‚

Dave, I’ll be more optimistic. I look forward to seeing you at multiple anniversaries of multiple Mariner World’s Championships. It’s good to be alive.
