You didn’t miss anything other than another wasted quality start from a Mariners pitcher Dave.

Interesting… this lineup worked so well the past couple of days it makes sense to just leave it as is. /sarcasm

Actually, a bike trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway sounds like an awesome way to spend a Saturday.

And, despite the game being a featured Fox Saturday Baseball broadcast, there wasn’t really much to be missed.

I read they’ve been working with Moore on blocking balls in the dirt, so I guess they think he’s been letting stuff get by him too frequently.

I suppose it shows how low my expectations for catcher have gotten – I thought he’d been doing pretty good since, unlike when RoJo was back there, I wasn’t seeing normal pitches getting dropped on a regular basis (I am being serious, not snarky). Of course I haven’t watched the last several games, only listened to the radio – so maybe he’s been exceptionally bad recently?

    BTW, if Friday’s game was “Game 128”, then yesterday’s “missed” would’ve been “Game 129” & today’s should be “Game 130” – not 129 as shown, right…?

  5. GoldenGutz on August 29th, 2010 12:33 pm

Hopefully with all these losses piling up, we are in a spot to acquire Gerrit Cole.

  6. scott19 on August 29th, 2010 12:46 pm

I wonder if Ichiro’s alleged “throwing error” the other night prompted the coaching staff to go over a few things with Moore on defense?

  7. msfanmike on August 29th, 2010 12:56 pm

    Correct!

We can refer to yesterday’s non-thread as the Game Thread formerly known as Prince.

Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 11:36 am Sunday’s game – p’Tui is back in left

Thinking positive… maybe Brown is under orders to get that #1 draft pick at any cost!

I think there is 0.0% chance that we can “catch” Pittsburgh. They are 7 games ahead/back of us – with very little reason to believe that they are capable of winning 7 more games this season.

    “p’Tui” … I like it. Nicely done.

hehehe – well I took the suggestion that we just “extend Friday’s game thread through the rest of the season” seriously! 😀

hehehe – well I took the suggestion that we just “extend Friday’s game thread through the rest of the season” seriously

It was a reasonable conclusion to reach since this season has essentially been one long run-on sentence anyway.

  12. Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 1:18 pm

Wow, Minnesota has scored 109 runs in the first inning over the course of this season. That’s a bit more than 25% of the runs the Mariners have managed to score in all nine innings…

Or, as Bugs Bunny might’ve put it, this thread was next thread last thread…that means last thread isn’t this thread until next thread! 🙂

  14. msfanmike on August 29th, 2010 2:06 pm

The “Howitzer” lives. Now, if he could block the ball consistently …

I am counting the minutes to the next Tui “K.” I figure 2 perfect innings of no-offense and he makes the last out. An inning lasts 17 minutes (plus or minus – when teams that actually do score runs play) … so factoring in the proper amount of offensive ineptidude, I expect to see Tui end another inning at approximately 2:26 pm PDT.

  15. Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 2:21 pm

Yeah, Moore obviously does need to work on blocking those balls in the dirt. French isn’t exactly a fireballer…

(But he’s still better than RoJo)

  16. msfanmike on August 29th, 2010 2:22 pm

Missed it by 5 minutes and a groundout. Well, at least he did end the inning.

  17. cjhenry on August 29th, 2010 2:24 pm

Boy, the league has really figure out how to get Guti to fish for that outside pitch. Did you see the how far the Twins catcher moved over to his right to set up that Pavano pitch?

He’s been totally exposed and doesn’t seem to be capable of adjusting to lay off that pitch.

  18. msfanmike on August 29th, 2010 2:26 pm

(But he’s still better than RoJo

    )

Definitely … and by a pretty wide margin. Moore doesn’t drop as many balls thrown directly into his glove as Rojo does, but he doesn’t move real well to block balls in the dirt. Either he isn’t quick enough or he doesn’t position himself quickly enough. He also doesn’t turn his glove very well. He has a great, great arm – a shitty stick, below average positioning/reactions … in other words, a 26 year old Mariner prospect.

  19. Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 2:31 pm

Moore doesn’t drop as many balls thrown directly into his glove as Rojo does

That really drove me nuts about RoJo – how frequently he’d drop normal, in the strike zone, pitches.

I know that’s much less important than blocking balls in the dirt, which neither guy does particularly well; but for some reason I found that aspect of Rob’s game so maddening!

  20. msfanmike on August 29th, 2010 2:33 pm

He has a great, great arm – a shitty stick, below average positioning/reactions … in other words, a 26 year old Mariner prospect.

… and I hope the bat develops, so he doesn’t become another 1 “plus-tool” wonder with 4 below average MLB tools.

  21. Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 2:34 pm

BTW I have to take a moment to recognize and commend the Mariner’s starting pitching staff. I know if it were me consistently getting no run support, there’s no way I’d be keeping my cool (and continuing to pitch well) this late in the season – you’d see me out on the mound, glowering and muttering to myself all the time.

I’d probably also be taking regular “batting practice” against the Gatorade containers in the dugout.

  22. cjhenry on August 29th, 2010 2:40 pm

Well you can’t blame the Mariners for RoJo’s struggles behind the plate.

Oops, there’s a twins homer. Gone. Man that is a good baseball team. Just a bunch of well managed big , strong guys.

Anyway , you can’t blame the Mariners, they just didn’t know…..about the 53 passed balls in 333 minor league games. No, it was Felix and his “air cutter”.

  23. Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 2:43 pm

Anyone remember those seasons when a one- or two-run lead for the other team didn’t seem insurmountable?

  24. cjhenry on August 29th, 2010 2:48 pm

Ok, quickly how are they going to squander this inning?

Here’s some advice….Hey Franklin, don’t swing at that outside breaking ball anymore, ever, ever , ever.

  25. MariLOLs on August 29th, 2010 2:49 pm

Why are we still mentioning RoJo? It was a traumatizing few months, I know, but it’s over now. He can’t hurt us anymore.

  26. msfanmike on August 29th, 2010 2:57 pm

Good point, but you are overlooking the September callups. He will be called up after Tacoma’s season ends, so yes … he can still find ways to hurt us – and he will.

How bout that offensive uprising. Moore hit the ball just softly enough to not get doubled up (good take out slide by Guti). And, Tui ended yet another inning. It’s a win-win for everyone.

  27. Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 2:57 pm

    I spoke too soon!

BTW, MariLOLs – RoJo is still in the organization, and given how much people in the org liked him I’m not ready to say he can’t hurt us any more. 🙂

  28. MariLOLs on August 29th, 2010 2:57 pm

Heh, RoJo is tied for the MLB lead in passed balls, and he only caught 60 or so games. Too funny.

  29. Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 2:59 pm

League pitching to Moore – this may get interesting…

  30. msfanmike on August 29th, 2010 3:00 pm

    I spoke too soon!

No you didn’t. You said it correctly. “Luck” played into the equation, and they actually scored. Ball landed barely in front of Repko. Ball landed at the ankles of Young. “Baby steps” flew down the line and slid home safely. Moore’s tap to SS avoiding the double-play. Lucky … on all accounts.

  31. Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 3:00 pm

haha, Blowers talking about Paperboy’s arm strength… he’s certainly been strong enough to throw it into the stands recently!

I prefer to see the glass as three-eights full, thank you very much.

  33. cjhenry on August 29th, 2010 3:07 pm

Sims was going on excitedly awhile about about how good our pitching was and how next year we are “bringing up the boppers”

Who are said “boppers” and where are they coming up from? A magic fairy land beneath Puget Sound.

And gosh then he started singing the theme from the Patti Duke show. Alternate reality time.

  34. Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 3:08 pm

    What the HECK?

    (that moose balloon)

  35. cjhenry on August 29th, 2010 3:10 pm

Oh, good they actually showed the moose balloon. Between that, the Patti Duke theme, and the “Boppers” I thought someone slipped acid in my soda pop.

Whatever it takes to liven up a 2010 Mariners baseball game!

Nifty little DP to end the game. Nicely done!

I must have needed the laugh … because this certainly made me do it. Thank you!

  39. Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 3:21 pm

I like pitchers’ duels – I’m just rather tired of them nowadays!

    Yay Ms!!

  40. Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 3:22 pm

I know what you mean, Mike! Laughing is better than being depressed about the team (although I’ll admit I’ve felt a good deal of that as well).

  41. Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 3:24 pm

Wow, all that wind yet The Count’s hair isn’t budging – that’s impressive.

  42. Henry on August 29th, 2010 4:15 pm

As I was shuddering at today’s lineup (with about the worst hitter in the league at cleanup) I looked at the incompetent Kotchman and wondered if any other team was close to the misery of this 4-5 combo. I looked at yesterday’s stats, where Lopez was -23 and Kotchman -13. No other team was close to that level for 4-5. Toronto was at -4 and every other team was positive. All but two (Oakland and the Twins) were in double digits. Just another way of documenting the hooror of this offense

  43. Marinerman1979 on August 29th, 2010 8:23 pm

I was hoping you’d stop doing these in protest of Lopez being on the team…

  44. Westside guy on August 29th, 2010 10:01 pm

Okay, the M’s have to go 12-20 the rest of the way in order to avoid 100 losses… that’s only a .375 winning percentage. They probably can pull that off, unless they do something really dumb like keep running Tui out in left field on a regular basis.

I found it a little funny that Langerhans went in as a defensive replacement, given that he’s also significantly better than Tui offensively.

  45. Henry on August 29th, 2010 10:15 pm

Hey, that’s the first comment I have made about Lopez. I did make one about Tui in the past…there is another Henry on this listserv…

  46. marinerblue on August 30th, 2010 11:36 am

one guy in the lineup with a BA over .250. unbelievable.

  47. Paul B on August 30th, 2010 11:56 am

    What the HECK?

    (that moose balloon)

We were at the game, and when this thing started dancing we were like, what is that?

Never saw it before. It has a really huge head, and apparently the body is big enough that the person inside can actually complete switch ends when it is lying down on its face.

    Weird.

I was thinking it might be the same person who does the Moose, but if not it would be really kind of funny if the fuzzy Moose came out and got in a fight with the balloon Moose.

  48. Paul B on August 30th, 2010 12:01 pm

Oh, regarding the bad M’s lineup…

Well the two worst hitters, batting 4th and 5th, got the hits that set up that inning, and scored the only two Mariner runs. So, poor lineup decisions have been reinforced today.

OK, Tui and Moore have lower wOBAs than the dynamic duo, but I kind of think that Moore will get better and Tui will eventually be replacement level at least.

  49. msfanmike on August 30th, 2010 12:32 pm

    You are definitely optimistic.

Personally, I would prefer it if it would have said the following:

OK, Tui and Moore have lower wOBAs than the dynamic duo, but I kind of think that Moore will get better and Tui will eventually be replaced replacement level at least.
