Monday rumors

Dave · December 4, 2006 at 3:15 pm · Filed Under Mariners

We’ll give you guys a new thread so you stop refreshing the Guillen one every five seconds and hammering our server. Please be kind.

The M’s are talking about Manny. Hooray. (11 pm edit: Strong talk, at that)

The M’s are willing to deal Sexson. Hooray.

The M’s officially signed Guillen, DFA’d Livingston. Hooray.

Hard to complain about any of the rumblings so far. No Carl Everett or Jarrod Washburn type rumors to make me want to crawl up in a ball and cry.

so you stop refreshing the Guillen one every five seconds and hammering our server

This is what happens when you offer arbitration to Corco.

  2. JI on December 4th, 2006 3:31 pm

I wonder if we could acquire Manny and still have enough to bring in another SP and avoid a Woods/Baek suckfest…

  3. MarinerDan on December 4th, 2006 3:31 pm

Rumor is that the Cubs are offering Jacque Jones in trade talks? Dave, I know you thought Jones would have been a good move for the M’s last year (and I think you thought the Cubs deal was reasonable) so is there any chance of an M’s-Cubs deal for Jones? If so, who do you think we might give up?

  4. Phoenician Todd on December 4th, 2006 3:37 pm

My only question is why would we need Jones now that we have singed Guillen. That would give us 5 outfielders; I can only imagine that working if they transition Ibanez to first and dump Sexson.

  5. atait on December 4th, 2006 3:39 pm

Dave, are these rumors from your sources or from the “mainstream” sources such as Gammons/Rosenthal/et al?

BTW, I’m very wary of a Jones/Putz package for Manny.

  6. the other benno on December 4th, 2006 3:49 pm

From the lastest report from the winter meetings by Jerry Crasnick at ESPN:

    • The Royals, who are interested in free-agent pitchers Gil Meche and Miguel Batista, talked to the agents for Ryan Franklin on Monday.

I know we have our own problems here in Seattle, but god it must suck to be the Royals.

  7. Tek Jansen on December 4th, 2006 3:52 pm

#6 — Thanks for putting it into perspective.

  8. NODO Dweller on December 4th, 2006 8:04 pm

    Also from Jerry @ ESPN

Ted Lilly’s agent Larry O’Brien arrived in Orlando on Monday afternoon and told ESPN.com that he plans to meet with front office executives from the Cubs, Giants, Yankees, Blue Jays and Mariners on Tuesday.

    Uh oh.

  9. Tak on December 4th, 2006 8:06 pm

    Tim Brown @ Yahoo Sports

Gil Meche, a serviceable right-hander who has won 21 games over the last two seasons, is getting serious interest from five teams. The Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles and San Francisco Giants all appear willing to offer four years.

    uh oh to that >.

  10. Dave on December 4th, 2006 8:12 pm

The M’s haven’t made an offer to Meche in weeks.

  11. KingCorran on December 4th, 2006 8:15 pm

The rumor I’m hearing is a three-way with SF and Boston, where Boston would get Jones and Soriano (with some sources saying Putz), and SF would get Sexson. We’d end up with Manny and Lowry. Another separate rumor (which seems to be contingent on a Sexson trade… any Sexson trade) has us going after Adam LaRoche to replace Richie.

  12. KingCorran on December 4th, 2006 8:16 pm

Oh – and I’m not sure what Boston would get from SF in that trade, but it would be something. ^_^

I’ve seen this rumor on enough sites (SportSpot, Lookout Landing, Roto Authority, MLB Trade Rumors, etc) to be willing to make the post without referring back to any one of them. I’m sure you can find sources with your eyes closed, if you’re curious.

  13. Jerry Pezzino on December 4th, 2006 8:18 pm

    If true, that equates to:

    M’s get – Ramirez, Lowry
    BoSox get – Putz, Jones
    Giants get – Sexson

Would SF really get rid of Lowry for Sexson?

  14. thr33niL on December 4th, 2006 8:23 pm

If we can get Manny and Lowry by giving up Jones, Soriano and Sexson.. Thats a heckuva move.

  15. Dave on December 4th, 2006 8:23 pm

Okay, so here’s the deal – the names being banded about are wrong, but the concept is true. It’s also pretty unlikely. Boston still wants the moon.

  16. OscarTehGrouch on December 4th, 2006 8:28 pm

New guy here, kind of been trolling around and decided to participate now. I am in no way as knowledgable as the rest of you but…

Also with #13, Would SF really trade Lowry for Sexson? I don’t know jack about the weird stats y’all use but I know Lowry was money for my fantasy team at certain points of last season ^_^. Is it because they have good depth in the rotation already that they’d be willing to part with Lowry? Would the M’s pay part of Sexson’s salary if they did trade him to SF?

  17. IdahoInvader on December 4th, 2006 8:47 pm

I think its sad that Meche gets referred to as “someone with 21 wins the last two seasons” and some GM will actually use that as a reason to give him outrageous money over 3-4 years.

  18. Typical Idiot Fan on December 4th, 2006 8:50 pm

Okay, so here’s the deal – the names being banded about are wrong, but the concept is true. It’s also pretty unlikely. Boston still wants the moon.

Then my guess is something more like Reed and Soriano and Sexson from the Mariners, Ramirez from Boston, and Lowry from San Francisco, but Boston is wanting to get too much while unloading the entire contract onto someone.

Basically they don’t want to pay for any of Ramirez’s contract AND they want top prospects.

  19. warner28 on December 4th, 2006 8:51 pm

    #13

The problem with that rumor is why do a 3 way?

If the Giants and Red Sox are not exchanging any players it would make more sense for Seattle to do this as 2 seperat moves.

Sexson for Lowry now and continue talks with Boston for Manny.

Unless they are holding off because the Sox are interested in Sexson or the Mariners are trying to get them interested in Sexson instead of Jones.

  20. JI on December 4th, 2006 8:57 pm

    Dave,

What would you give up for Manny. It seems like Jones AND Putz is too much if we have to take on ALL of his salary. I agree If Lowry is the only player involved from SF, and they do not need BOS players to complete the Sexson-Lowry swap– then why go just pull the trigger?

  21. JI on December 4th, 2006 8:58 pm

    why not just…

  22. F-Rod on December 4th, 2006 9:11 pm

They can have Soriano, A. Jones, Sexson, J. Reed, and Broussard….lets just try to hold onto putz and bring in Lowry + Ramirez.

  23. joser on December 4th, 2006 9:19 pm

I suspect Boston wants more that. They’ll want Reed, Putz, and Soriano. Maybe Jones too. Seriously, that’s the way Boston has been with Manny (and yeah, that would give them way too much outfield, but they’d turn around and deal it for better fits).

The Dodgers have interest in Manny Ramirez but have been turned off by what they consider the outrageous price tag. The Red Sox want three players, including power-hitting outfielder prospect Matt Kemp and budding closer Jonathan Broxton. And they also want the Dodgers to pay Ramirez’s entire salary of $38 million the next two years.

    — LA Times

I warmed up to the idea back when Dave proposed bringing Manny here (I started off hating it, but it grew on me). But no way is it worth that kind of talent grab, even if they can get something back for clearing Sexson off the books. I’m not against trading any or even all of those guys, but not for one bat that could stop hitting, or break down, or just go pout, at any time.

  24. gwangung on December 4th, 2006 9:21 pm

Oh, please, folks….offering our lower grade pieces for Manny? Think realistically. A trade of this side is going to make BOTH sides wince a bit.

Think of players whose loss is going to hurt a bit….players like Reed or Broussard aren’t in the same league….

  25. argh on December 4th, 2006 9:33 pm

Manny for Reed and Broussard, de nada (also: not gonna happen). Add in Putz, Soriano and maybe Jones, plus $38 million in vigorish and we’re talking heartburn.

  26. etowncoug on December 4th, 2006 9:34 pm

This is about all I can say about the Manny deal:

I am a huge fan of J.J. Putz and Adam Jones. I would trade both of them for Manny in a nanosecond. Wouldn’t even think twice about it.

  27. MedicineHat on December 4th, 2006 9:35 pm

    espn.com

Free agent right-hander Vicente Padilla has reached a preliminary agreement on a $34 million, three-year contract with the Texas Rangers, a baseball source said Monday night.

  28. Mike Hargrove's Cameltoe on December 4th, 2006 9:36 pm

I would not trade Putz unless we had another closer in place.

  29. jordan on December 4th, 2006 9:38 pm

ive heard this manny rumor before. Where though? o ya, last year!

    Its not going to happen

  30. etowncoug on December 4th, 2006 9:43 pm

    MHC-

His name is Rafael Soriano or George Sherril. BTW who was JJ Putz before last season anyway. Just another guy with a live arm and average results… I really don’t think he’s that hard to replace.

  31. Matthew Carruth on December 4th, 2006 9:43 pm

I don’t know what the Ms would move to Atlanta, but if they could pull off trades netting them Lowry, Manny, and LaRoche I think I wouldn’t sleep for 3 days.

BTW, Lowry is signed through 2010 at a tasty tasty rate.

  32. dw on December 4th, 2006 9:54 pm

Every time I hear these rumors I get my hopes up, and then in the end the M’s walk out with a year’s supply of Rice-A-Roni and some Haggar slacks.

I just don’t think they’re leaving Orlando with anything outside of Schmidt, and even that’s dicey. I’m figuring on them dumping Reed to the Marlins for a couple of B-prospects and signing Ted Lilly to 2/20.

  33. dw on December 4th, 2006 9:55 pm

You didn’t just forget to close them, you completely botched the link.

  36. k0o56 on December 4th, 2006 10:12 pm

[new to this but have been reading you guys for a while]

#34 I agree. There are always these rumors around the Mariners and I get my hopes high just to feel disappointed in the end. I mean, it’d be great to get Manny/Zito/Lowry/LaRouche/Jennings/Lilly [or any combination] but is it reeeeeally being worked out or just some out of control jibber jabber?

When I first saw the supposed three team deal where we give up Jones, Soriano, Sexson and get Manny and Lowry in return, I thought “they’d better pull the trigger on that one” but after reading more sources, the name Putz came up. I think the deal would be sweeter if we kept him, but if he is a necessity to make a deal then we better keep Soriano. Having a big bat like Ramirez in our lineup is great but I believe having an anchor at the end of the game is more crucial.

I’m pretty okay with the Schmidt idea but would far rather see Zito in an M’s jersey. Sadly, I highly doubt that we’ll be able to afford him, no matter what the rumors say. Truly believe he’d be worth the money, especially at Safeco.

  37. bigred on December 4th, 2006 10:21 pm

Sorry but you are sadly mistaken. Zito would not look good nor play well in an M’s uniform. His velocity is down and with it goes his ability to win ballgames. Sign Schmidt, trade away Big Sexy and let’s get to April soon because this speculation bullshit sucks compared to actual ballgames.

  38. RockstarBill on December 4th, 2006 10:26 pm

I feel like a Tom Leykis caller here… but…. First time, long time. Now with that said..

I think us trading for Manny is a brilliant idea. If it gets us into a winning mode then that will only bode well come trading time next year. Who wouldnt want to play for a team with Ichico, Beltre, Ramirez, Ibanez, and Guillen in its lineup? Provided we get some good pitching (Read: Zito) then come trade time mid-next season we can be looking for some pieces to make a good run at the playoffs/series. Sure Manny is a problem in left field, but come on… he can’t be any worse than Mike Morse! 🙂

With the current rumors, we are giving up players that currently dont have jobs or open holes on the team, and at least one of our multiple closer possibilities. If they want Putz, fine.. I’m sick of seeing him give up GW Salami’s, if they want Soriano, fine.. he hasnt done much with his health problems/bad luck. We have Lowe and Sherril in the weeds and either could turn into a fine closer.

    My $.02

    Bill

  39. k0o56 on December 4th, 2006 10:37 pm

If Lowe were available, then I’d be a lot more inclined to deal Putz and Soriano but when will he be ready to pitch? That’s the only dilemma I have with the trade.

The talk about reeling in a big fish [haha] in D-Train is very eye catching but is it realistic? I dunno.

  40. RockstarBill on December 4th, 2006 10:50 pm

I can’t watch the D-Train pitch for more than a few innings. His odd wind up starts to annoy me. Maybe that partially why he does so well? Heh.

Let’s say you dont make the deal, Soriano never finds form and Putz turns back into the guy he was before. We’ll be shuffling for closers anyhow, so why not make the move to improve the teams offense, shore up starting pitching then search around the system to shore up the pen and groom Sherril/Lowe for closing duties as needed.

  41. Wishhiker on December 4th, 2006 11:09 pm

Right now between 4OF/DH/1B (6 spots) we’ve got Ichiro, Chris, Jose, Raul, Richie, Ben, Jeremy, Adam and Mike Morse as possible players on the roster. After signing Guillen the talk was that this enabled the M’s to trade Sexson and/or Broussard. If you trade Sexson to lighten up the log-jam and get back an OF/DH type you aren’t removing anything. If you trade Sexson and Broussard you have to add a 1Bman unless you want to see Ibanez look bad enough that you have to acquire a 1Bman a month into the season, try Morse there which might end up as bad and gives him ABs you’d rather see others on the roster get or watch Bloomquist get 500 AB and really all the other problems apply with him starting even more so (except, possibly, defense). I don’t mind the idea of adding Ramirez, but fitting him into the lineup

    C Johjima
    1B?
    2B Lopez
    3B Beltre
    SS Betancourt
    LF Doyle
    CF Ichiro
    RF Guillen
    DH Manny

It looks like Ibanez is playing first base (bad idea) or the FO plans on trading him or another OF/DH type and picking up a 1Bman. I don’t mind the idea of trading Ibanez, but who here thinks the M’s are looking at that route? Ichiro? They just signed Guillen and just got Manny, so it looks like they’ll play Ibanez at first or trade Snelling. Which would you prefer? I like neither, but I have to say in this scenario I’d rather see them get some pitching help back for Snelling than watch Ibanez at first again. Another problem with this is it leaves the team with two players who you’d rather see DH, so you haveto bench one or play one in the field. It’s possible Manny could be adequate at 1B, but he’s never done it in MLB. I don’t see how Manny makes sense unless they’re willing to trade Ibanez, and then you’re replacing Ibanez and Sexson with Guillen and Manny. You get talent back too, but I’m talking about Offensive production. It doesn’t look like as much of an improvement as it looks before thinking about how everyone’s getting playing time. Maybe there’s some other way to work that out, but I don’t see it.

I’d rather see the team get pitching and MiLers back for the pieces they’re trading and Willis isn’t the only option. As long as you’d only be expecting a #2-3 type starter out of him and the pieces being traded aren’t out of line with that I like the idea.

  42. CSG on December 4th, 2006 11:19 pm

Noah Lowry was awful last year (xFIP of 5.66), with his K/G dropping to a Pineiroesque level. I realize he’ll be cheap for a few more years, but is he worth making that trade? Lowry was pretty good before last year, but if he keeps pitching at the level he pitched at last year, I sure don’t want to lose two really good relievers for one crappy starter. Did Lowry have injury issues last year that would explain how bad he was? If he did, will he be able to bounce back?

  43. Josh on December 4th, 2006 11:33 pm

If they want Putz, fine.. I’m sick of seeing him give up GW Salami’s

Because he is well-known for doing that.

I hear Bobby Ayala, Mike Schooler AND Norm Charlton are available. Might take some trade bait to get Joe Table, though.
