USSM on Fox “Game Thread”

Dave · July 30, 2006 at 9:25 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Seeing as how I’m geographically challenged, I won’t be appearing on KCPQ 13 with Derek, Jeff, and Jason tonight, when they join New York Vinnie and Dan Devone at 10:30 on Q It Up Sports.

I know many of our readers won’t be able to view the program either, so, for those of us who won’t get the joy of watching this unique blend of characters interact for half an hour, here’s a thread for those of you who want to interject comments during the show.

And if you live in Seattle, you really, really want to watch this. The comedy potential is out of this world.

Update: Reader and all around good guy PositivePaul has put the video online for those who want to watch Dan Devone call us statheads 894 times.

Second Update: Now it’s on Youtube, so we’ll spare Paul’s server’s the wrath of USSM overload.

#47 – maybe Vinnie inhaled Dave.

Uploading now, but the first segment’s 57 MB, and while it’s on a wired connection, it’ll take awhile to upload, even on Comcast.

    Second segment, too, is uploading:

I’ll see if I can shrink it any smaller. It sure ain’t going to upload any faster ๐Ÿ˜‰

Way to go fellas! Very enjoyable to watch… usually flip the channel when Q-it-up comes on. Enjoyed the Everett remark and also the postseason predictions, despite not being what I wanted to hear.

Maybe we can get a thread running on who Grover’s replacement will be.

Cool, I just get back from a long vacation and the first thing I see on the site is that the guys are on TV. Seems like I missed a lot as far as the team goes…

Well, all in all, it was a good show.

Yet, that notwithstanding, I’ve nevertheless got the following question: Why Kenny Lofton (.291/.346/.379)?

Although I’m sure that Mike Hargrove would be happy with Lofton in center field, I hope that Bill Bavasi doesn’t acquire the light hitting, weak throwing old-timer.

Instead of attempting to obtain Lofton from the Los Angeles Dodgers, however, Bavasi should inquire about the availablity of another Dodger, Jose Cruz, Jr. (.233/.353/.381), as he’d be a solid option for the Seattle Mariners as a switch-hitting fourth outfielder.

Anyhow, with craptastic pitchers such as Mark Hendrickson, Brett Tomko, and Aaron Sele in the Dodgers starting rotation, they should be willing to part with Cruz, Jr. for nothing more than a mid-level pitching prospect like Ceasr Jimenez.

    Update:

Just finished converting and uploading the clips to Flash 7 video files. Low quality, true, so video isn’t exactly HDTV. But, we’re talking 15 megs total (instead of 100). ๐Ÿ˜‰

it isn’t my imagination about Q it Up’s Mariner coverage, is it … that Devone just doesn’t really like baseball? Sad when Vinnie actually knows more about what those wacky ‘statheads’ are writing about, huh ๐Ÿ™‚

so, was Barbaro tonights stealth reference?

  10. Jeff Nye on July 31st, 2006 12:01 am

    Dan Devone was very irritating.

It’s a sad thing when New York Vinnie looks to be the /smart/ one among the broadcasters.

Thank you very much for helping us out of marketers Paul.

Nice job on the show guys.

  12. Rumpelstiltskin on July 31st, 2006 12:14 am

Loved the Barbaro comment… a dinosaur reference would’ve been nice, but you had to bring Barbaro into the equation to accurately show the dislike for C-Rex.

  13. Goob on July 31st, 2006 12:19 am

Great job on the show tonight, guys! And Paul, thanks for the uploads so that us here on the east coast had a change to watch it as well.

  14. cgmonk on July 31st, 2006 12:19 am

Props to PositivePaul so doing that so quick.

  15. Tap House Dan on July 31st, 2006 12:31 am

So the big three just dropped in for a couple of post-Q13 beers, and I don’t care what you all say, I found them to be very pleasant guys.

But seriously…. has anyone heard the Kenny Lofton and Arthur Rhodes talk? Interesting……..

  16. msb on July 31st, 2006 1:01 am

but what kind of beer did they order?

I hadn’t heard Lofton until it came up on the show, but there have been other interesting divisional rumorings tonight:

The Washington Post says the Angels, Astros, Twins and Marlins are currently involved in the bidding for Alfonso Soriano and the Angels & Astros have dropped out of the bidding for Miguel Tejada, sez Ken Rosenthal: “the Astros were willing to give up Roy Oswalt, Morgan Ensberg and Adam Everett for Tejada, but the Orioles still couldn’t make it work. Baltimore was trying to spin Oswalt to the Rangers for Hank Blalock, shortstop prospect Joaquin Arias and a top pitching prospect, something that seemingly would have put the organization in much better position for 2007 and beyond. However, the deal was killed by Orioles owner Peter Angelos.” Several people have the Rangers trying to get Brad Lidge, some reports say for Hank Blalock, Will Carroll says Brad Wilkerson and Rod Barajas for Lidge, Morgan Ensberg and Fernando Nieve…

  17. Tap House Dan on July 31st, 2006 1:23 am

Jason had a Dogfish Head Raison D’etre, and Derek had an Anchor Steam. Jeff is a non beer drinker, preferring instead a refreshing cocktail. I, sadly, could only watch them enjoy the bubbly goodness. Damn Washington State liquor laws…. (grumble grumble…)

  18. JMB on July 31st, 2006 1:23 am

We batted the Barbaro thing around beforehand… neither Derek nor I thought Jeff would actually pull it off, but when he did, we were like, “This is gold!”

It really did go very quickly. And we hardly talked about the trade deadline at all.

  19. JMB on July 31st, 2006 1:23 am

Minus two points for Tap House Dan — Jason was the one drinking a gin and tonic.

  20. Tap House Dan on July 31st, 2006 1:25 am

BTW, did you see espn.com’s projected Yankee lineup IF Sheffield and Matsui come back? It was sick. They had A-Rod hitting 6th!

By the way, what’s their payrool now? $500 million?

  21. Tap House Dan on July 31st, 2006 1:28 am

Doh! Busted. Don’t I gain at least those two points back though since I picked up the tab?

Hey, as bad as I am with names, at least I got ONE right! After back-to-back-to-back weekend closing shifts no less.

  22. Tap House Dan on July 31st, 2006 1:29 am

Also, let it be noted that I’m still here finishing up office work. Anyone wanna guess what’s in this paper cup next to the keyboard?
    (Shhhhhhhhh…..)

  23. NBarnes on July 31st, 2006 1:31 am

Roy Oswalt, Morgan Ensberg and Adam Everett for Tejada

What kind of idiot is GMing Baltimore that he didn’t move Heaven and Earth to make this happen? Either tell Angelos to let him do his job or quit on the grounds that Angelos is making you look like an idiot. You don’t need to have the spin-off of Oswalt (why spin him off anyway?) in place. What’s the worst that could happen, you’re ‘stuck’ with Oswalt pitching for you?

  24. Jeff on July 31st, 2006 2:17 am

For the record, I’m totally a beer drinker — I loves me some barley pop — but I had to drive back to Bellingham tonight. and much, much obliged for picking up the tab, Dan.

Thanks for watching, folks, and I appreciate Paul putting the videos online, too.

  25. Jonah Keri on July 31st, 2006 7:07 am

Wish I still lived in Seattle–I would have given anything to heckle you guys from behind the camera.

    Very, very well done.

  26. cgmonk on July 31st, 2006 7:45 am

Here it is on Youtube, I’m sorry I fell asleep:

Why is that [pause] I liked Derek’s comments about [pause] host on television [pause] overweight pitchers.

The host couldn’t put together a coherent thought in a sentence. Yes, I have that problem too when I’m thinking too fast, but I also (a) can control it and (b) don’t make a living on television.

Any one of the three would have made a better host of that show.

  28. bnem on July 31st, 2006 8:36 am

I think Devone blew the segment. He goes on and on about statheads, and then asks questions that have nothing to do with stats. No offense to you three, but how in the world are you supposed to know if the M’s are going to make a deal? It’s not like you talk to GMs, or even insiders on any regular basis. Now, if he had asked what the M’s need and why, maybe you could have provided some analysis.

Not sure if I missed it, but I don’t believe there was a single stat brought up. That’s called not knowing your guests.

  29. Dave on July 31st, 2006 9:17 am

We weren’t invited on to discuss statistical analysis. It was a roundtable on the state of the Mariners, and we were invited to answer questions about the team, which the guys did quite well, I think.

  30. Jay R. on July 31st, 2006 9:19 am

I wish I could express how excited I am to see someone call for Hargrove’s head on local TV! God that was sweet, and it really seemed to take Tweedledee and Tweedledum aback. Very nice work, fellas.

  31. PositivePaul on July 31st, 2006 10:33 am

You guys did a tremendous job. Seriously — I was very impressed with everyone, except, of course, that tool Devone. Vinnie was great, and interacted quite well with the USSM triumvirate.

You all came across as very knowledgable, without having that arrogant tone that some folks accuse you of displaying. Realistic, honest, yet very much fans of the game. Not quite as homerish as Vinnie, but that’s to be expected.

But Devone and his whole ‘stathead’ mantra. Come ON!

  32. petec on July 31st, 2006 10:46 am

Devone was nothing compared to what I heard on KJR last week. Someone called Gas and started talking about Everett’s OPS. Gastineau about blew a gasket. He told the guy “get your nose out of the sabermetric book” and proceeded to rip the guy.

Granted, the caller was trying to make a point about the relative suckiness of Everett vs Spiezio and Aurilia, which didn’t seem real relevant, but I was taken aback by the knee-jerk reaction of Gastineau. He positively bristled at the very mention of OPS.

    Did anyone else hear this?

  33. Jim Thomsen on July 31st, 2006 10:48 am

Nice work, guys, to the extent that you were allowed to speak.

    “You doing okay there, Jason?”

  34. jtopps on July 31st, 2006 12:27 pm

82– i heard that degment. Yeah, Gas really got angry about comparing the suckiness, but yeah, he definitely had no interest in OPS as a discussion point. It’s not like the guy was talking xFIP or something…

  35. gwangung on July 31st, 2006 3:26 pm

82รขโ‚ฌโ€œ i heard that degment. Yeah, Gas really got angry about comparing the suckiness, but yeah, he definitely had no interest in OPS as a discussion point.

Well, actually it was more that we were on the hook for one or two years afterwards plus the current one. With Everett, it was just this season.

Not so sure he didn’t have a point with that….

  36. IP on July 31st, 2006 5:27 pm

Finally got to watch this at home. Good jorb, “statheads”! ๐Ÿ™‚
