Game 87, Tigers at Mariners
Bonderman, who is awesome, vs Pineiro, who is not.

Deanna said “the latest segment in the saga of Mariners Makeover? It made me ashamed for my gender.”
Well, at least once a year you should get a taste of the way us guys feel on pretty much a daily basis…
As far as Guillen goes, keep in mind he was, and is, pretty fragile. I wanted to keep him at the time, but had to conceed that he would be part of a platoon because he always missed 30 or so games a year (and he’s done that or worse with the Tigers). So you’d be looking at “Willie Bloomquist, your starting shortstop” at least one or two games a week (or for several solid weeks). And I really have no complaints about Betancourt — he’s supplying more than adequate production for his position. I’m actually not surprised at Guillen’s improvement offensively, given the kind of overall health and energy increase you see in people cured of a latent TB infection, but I don’t think the team was looking that far ahead.
And then there were whatever “character” issues the team had with him (DUI, etc) — there clearly was a team desire to end “Carlos’ and Freddie’s Excellent Adventure” even if they got shortchanged in the process. Mind you, I’d rather have to deal with Guillen’s character issues than Everett’s, but apparently the team’s tolerance for less than family-friendly players came too late for the Venezuelan Party Twins.
Was at the game last night. Choo should not be in center field. His routes were embarassing, and he missed a couple of what appeared to be routine catches. But I suppose that’s old news to those of you who have been paying attention.
Lowe, on the other hand, was a friggin’ BLAST to watch. Yeah, he got hit, but watching 97-99mph heat coming at you (we had incredible seats behind the plate) was really fun. Augurs well for next year, provided he misses a few more bats. What an unexpected treat, particularly since the last two games I’ve been to have unintentionally been Pineiro starts. To his credit, he had a pretty decent outing.
Oh yeah, and Ichiro!’s cannon to home plate – wow. And his later throw off the back foot from the corner of the outfield to second to cheat someone-or-other out of what looked like a sure double – man. That was fun.
Traveling in southern Missouri right now, watching Cardinals at Houston on the St. Louis Fox affiliate (not sure if it’s a local or national broadcast). Lou Piniella is in the broadcast booth as the color man. (If you can pick up the game on Extra Innings or mlb.tv — do it, a good 4-4 game right now in the 5th).
We’ll take you back in Seattle, Lou!! You can have any job you want in the broadcast booth or dugout. . . . though, he just said Puljos reminds him of Edgar. Hmmmm. I LOVE Edgar, but not sure about that. At least acknowledged Albert is a “little bigger and stronger.” Anybody know how often Lou is broadcasting these days?
Oh my god… Carl Everett is playing Right Field while Ichiro is DHing tonight.
With Bloomquist starting in CF. Going to be a long night.
