Game 59, Royals at Mariners
RHP Mike Wood v RHP Gil Meche. 7:05, FSN. What a nice night for a game (at least until it gets horribly cold, anyway).
Standard defensive alignment and Beltre’s sticking to that #2 slot in the order.
So today’s fun note: I often mentally play a game when I compare lineups, which is “would I swap players?” For the Royals, there’s almost no one.
DeJesus for Reed – no
Graffanino for Lopez – no
Mienkiewicz for Sexson – I’ve never been a big fan of Sexson’s contract’s huge back end, but straight up? Nah.
Sanders for Ichiro! – no
Stairs for Everett – yes, but I’ve always had a soft spot for the Wonder Hamster, and my personal aversion to Everett’s well known.
Costa for Ibanez – no
Teahen for Beltre – it would get us out of Beltre’s contract, and yet no
Berroa for Betancourt – no
Buck for Johjima – no
And a lot of those are laughable comparisons. Okay, so then I thought about the Tacoma Rainiers… and I *still* wouldn’t trade most of the Rainiers for their KC equivalent player. That’s sad.

Maybe try to stretch Soriano out in winterball, or is that too many innings on the surgically repaired arm?
Personally, I don’t mind him gunslinging in relief if he’s gonna be this money.

Yeah, my mlb.tv feed is acting up too. I’m guessing they are running it off a 386 server based on anticipated demand for the game.
Lopez is pretty much the only thing that keeps me watching this team…

Is anyone else having trouble with the radio broadcast of the game? It keeps cutting out on me. Only for a second or so but it’s getting annoying.

Why would it be so hard to start stretching out Soriano right now? He’s still got two-thirds of a season left — it’s not like this is August for gosh sakes! If Putz is for real (and by all accounts and statistical analyses, he does seem to be just that), then keeping Soriano as a relief ace seems a little superfluous to me. Unless they used him as a 2-3 inning guy, like a Santana or Liriano, then it seems silly to keep him in the pen with Putz doing so well. At least TRY him as a starter, right? Anyone with me?

Agreed. No doubt that’s a formidble bullpen . . . but I do wonder how a year or two down the road a 1-2 punch of Felix and Soriano might look.
Either way, I’m glad he’s back to his old self. He helps no matter where they put him.

Jeez, I can’t get a reliable box score anywhere. Gameday has it 5-0 Royals, and ESPN has it 3-0 Royals.
Deep analysis from Kruger. Of course he forgot a few things. KC hits likes a AA team and the best thing Meche did tonight was keeping his pitches down. It wasn’t starting batters off with off speed stuff, it was keeping his pitches low.
Bad news: no more KC for three months.
Still wonder whether they should have used Guardado once it switched to a three-run lead. He’s bad but it takes a lot for the Royals to score three runs in one inning, and this way Putz is fresher for tomorrow
On the radio postgame show, they were talking to Putz when Raul could be heard yelling “Go J.J.” and other such things to make fun of him. J.J. responded by saying, “Raul had diarrhea last night, that’s why he’s so happy tonight.” Absolutely hilarious.

HELP – I was tracking this game all night, and was feeling good about (?) a 4-1 Mariner win! Yet MLB.com shows 5-0 Royals suddenly (with a seemingly legit box score to back it up) and Yahoo! Sports shows 4-3 Mariners. Have I tapped in to a parallel universe? If so, is it really parallel, or just tangential? Didn’t Jose Lopez hit 2 doubles? Or did he hit into 2 double-plays?

Well, aside from the win, the best thing to come out of this thread is the shared knowledge that the KOMO AM feed is crapping out intermittently. I’ve been rearranging every item in my kitchen capable of creating RF interference in an effort to stop it. Now I know it’s not just me.

OK. MLB.com shows 4-1 Mariners again. I am going to bed, comforted.
But I SWEAR it showed 5-0 Royals, with KC scoring 3 in the 6th and 2 in the 8th, with the last 1.5 innings showing “x”, like the Mariners abstained from their last 2 innings, just because they didn’t want to embarass themselves even more. It even said ‘Beltre grounds out softly to short’ for the last out.
I gotta find another hobby…

Knock on wood while I type this – The matchups for the next six games look pretty good for the M’s if we can take 4 or 5 of them that series against Oakland is going to be really interesting.
