What is Cliff Lee’s trade value?
Not even including the 2013 dollars a team would be taking on, Lee would either cost $62.5 million for the next two seasons or $77.5 million for the next three.
And throw in 8MM$ for the rest of this year. So, here's the question: if Cliff Lee were available as a free agent right now, and you can have him for 3 1/3 seasons, which teams would spent 86MM$ to get him?? I just did a real quick back-of-envelope calculation, and right off the bat, I have his value at exactly 86MM$. I didn't even try to play with the numbers to get that. So, his contract is perfectly commensurate with his talent.
So, the extra value comes only to the team that is in the playoff sweetspot. Whatever you figure that is worth, that's what Cliff Lee is worth in prospects.
