WAR: the G.D.P. of baseball
GDP in this case is Gross Domestic Product, not Grounded into Double Play. Anyway, Forman lays out the basic idea that WAR is an ESTIMATE of what we think happened, much the same way that GDP is an estimate. And, as Bill James noted a while ago, it's a GOOD thing that we have multiple ways of estimating the same thing (and Sean notes that the GDP is like that too). That Sean and David may disagree in a few cases is the exception that proves the rule: we are estimating. There are no truths here. If you want truths, look at the final score. If you want understanding, then either dig deeper, or, accept the work of those people who are digging deeper. Again, much like the GDP.
Anyway, great post by Sean.
