Tie-breakers, without playing a game
?There's an interesting question by a Bill James reader. Right now, the five NL teams have been set, and it's a matter of who is the division winner (Cards, Pirates), with the other being the Wild Card along with the Giants. If the Cards and Pirates tie, those two teams have to play a game to decide who is the division winner and who plays against the (lower-ranked) Giants.
So, the reader reasons that that's a disadvantage to play Game #163 in order to decide who plays the Giants (while the Giants rest). I think it's a good point. I would just go on run differential.
