Relievers and leverage

?An excellent piece by Anthony on the mindset of managers when it comes to relievers.  The key constraint:

I'm only using Allen, who has seemingly "graduated" to the ninth, as an example for the application of the leverage index because that's precisely what his manager, Terry Francona, intends to do in 2015.

Or at least, on a limited basis.

"There might be a time or two you'll see him in the eighth," Francona said. "You'd hate to wait around for the ninth and not get there. But sometimes you get an established [closer] who doesn't want to do that."

Indeed, many relievers, especially the established ones, value the in-game mental and physical preparation a stricter role provides.

Fangraphs tracks alot of my reliever stats, notably Leverage Index (LI),as well as Shutdowns/Meltdowns, and RE24.  The real face is Dellin Betances, whose LI was 1.36 when he entered the game, typical stuff for a setup guy, with 34 shutdowns and 7 meltdowns.  There was also Wade Davis, an even higher LI at 1.45, with similar success and his teammate Herrera at 1.28 LI.  These guys found great success and the stats reflected great success... even though they combined for 4 saves.  There should be a push away from saves which really doesn't provide a balanced view of anything; and of the thing it does do, it hardly does it in any equitable fashion.
