Pitchers with best stuff
Long-time Straight Arrow reader Jared has an article on ESPN, that uses a subset of the PITCHf/x data to come up with one component of pitching talent: stuff.
The most obvious missing component, and likely the most important, is most obvious in Kershaw's low-ranking:
Our "stuff" projection underrates Kershaw's greatness, most importantly by ignoring his pitch locations and sequences.
Other notable missing pitchers are Cliff Lee and Felix. It's important to remember that this is similar to judging a hitter only on his power, but ignoring his ability to get on base. When you focus on only one component, you are getting a list based on that single component (and being agnostic on all other components).
As long as you use Jared's work properly, then he's given us a great outcome to look at.?
