Judgemental Stats

?I agree with Joe here.  Data recorders should record data while data analysts should analyze data.

The key one I think is the empty net goal in hockey.  It counts as a goal on the scoreboard, and it counts as a goal on the player's stat sheet.  But, it is categorized by the data RECORDER.  If the data ANALYST chooses to dismiss or otherwise underweight the event, he can do so, he can make his case.  But,officially, it's a goal, because it's an event that happened.

Same thing with the last-second long interception.  It IS an interception.  But, it should be classified as a long interception that really leads to no possible change in win expectancy any more than it was an incompleted pass.

And in baseball, the "defensive indifference" IS a subset of the stolen base.  It is what it is actually doing.  If we want the data RECORDER to helps us out like the empty net goal, then that's a good thing.  But, in terms of base accumulation, a defensive indifference is no different than a stolen base.  The data ANALYST will interpret the event however he wants.
