Gumbel v Samson

Bryant Gumbel gave an old Mike Wallace (current Daily Show) grilling to David Samson.  Gotta give props to Samson for going into that fire.  The then-councillor-now-mayor that was against the park from the outset came off looking the best I thought.

Bryant Gumbel, host of “HBO’s Real Sports,” sat down with the Florida Marlins president to talk about how the team got taxpayers to put up most of the money for a beautiful new ballpark in Little Havana — and then ticked off fans by trading away Jose Reyes and other expensive but productive stars.

Samson tells Gumbel in the interview that will air on Tuesday that the team had to get rid of its stars because attendance in the new park was lower than expected while costs were higher than anticipated. Gumbel points out that many Miami fans feel they were the victims of a bait-and-switch scam.

“There was no lying at all,” Samson says. “And the fact of the matter is just because we got divorced doesn’t mean we were lying on our wedding day.”

“You have to be somewhat concerned that if there’s a feeling among ballplayers that this is a place you get double-crossed,” Gumbel says. “It’s gonna make it real hard for you to build a winner here.”

“We’ve had no shortage of players who want to come play here,” Samson responds. “If you offer the most years and the most money to a player, they’re gonna play for your team, whether you’re located in the far reaches of Yemen or in Miami, Fla.” ?
