Felix v Scherzer
?Felix and Scherzer have very similar stat lines except for the hits allowed. Felix has given up 42 more hits. And in spite of that, they've been given up the same number of runs.
Why? BABIP with men on base. Felix' BABIP is .332 with bases empty, but only .267 with men on base, while Scherzer's splits are .228 with empty and .286 with runners. Basically, Felix (or Felix with the Mariners) has been able to sequence his hits allowed so that they drastically minimize their impact. While Scherzer starts to bunch up his hits once runners get on base. And in the end, Felix can give up 42 more hits, and end up giving up no more runs than Scherzer.
So the question is: do we simply care about the end result, the runs allowed? Or, do we only care that he gave up so many more hits and we'll have to ding Felix, even though he escaped himself out of all his jams? Felix's GB machine got him 22 DPs to Scherzer's 9.
Does it matter that Felix had to work harder to get to the same end result as Scherzer?
