Catchers and WAR

Catchers get hit in all their stats.  It basically stems from the fact that a non-catcher can play 150+ games regularly, while catchers lose about 20 games to extra rest. They get a hit on games, PA, HR, etc.  And WAR simply reflects that.  We can adjust catcher stats (at least in an adjusted-WAR) to try to account for the fact that catchers are simply put in a tougher position, and someone has to be catcher.

In this tweet, I said:

At seasonal level (born 1931+), the number of 5+WAR seasons of non-catchers (1389, or 174 per pos) is equal to 4+ WAR seasons of catchers (170).

So, the question is if 150 games from a non-catcher = 120 games from a catcher?

We could offer a "hazard pay" bonus if true.

And in this tweet:

Of players born since 1931, there are 75 non-catchers with 60+ WAR, or ~9 players per position.

I need to set the baseline at 44 WAR to get 9 catchers. 60/44 =  1.36

If I set it at 46 WAR, I get 8 catchers.  60/46 = 1.30

So I think we can set it somewhere in that vicinity.

Therefore, adding about 1.2 to 1.3 WAR per 162 games caught might be in order.  I'll leave it to aspiring saberists to come up with something more concrete.
