Optimizing a batter’s swing
?A terrific piece by Alan.(*) He breaks it down by component, and sets aside (for now) the issue of timing.
(*) I hadn't realized that Alan wrote this. As I was reading, it was getting better and better, properly handling the assumptions and limitations, even noting the baseline of the tee ball and how that might mess up a hitter. By the end, I thought "this guy really gets it!" I went back to the top of the article to see the byline so I could post this article, and there was Alan's name.
One suggestion for a future study, to look at empirical results that includes the issue of timing, is to look at pitches "down the middle". Batters are always looking for pitches down the middle, especially the "hanging curveball", so that that at least (tries to) put the fastball and curveball in the same bucket, where the batter is simply going to use his time-tested "perfect" swing. And maybe limit it to the first pitch of the at bat, so there's no sequencing issues to deal with.
