Moneyballing NFL
Excellent article by Vorkunov, as our old buddy Brian Burke and Ben Alamar make an appearance.
Last November, then-Jets offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo launched into an extemporaneous tirade. DeGuglielmo has been an offensive line coach in the college and pro ranks for more than 20 years. In the middle of a difficult season, he was unhappy with how the line had been perceived, so he raged and, along the way, threw in an ad-hoc attack on advanced analytics.
“All of a sudden we’re ‘Moneyballing’ offensive lineman,” he said. “(The) world I live in isn’t a fantasy world.”
Among its practitioners, there is some disagreement about where analytics can best be useful. Burke, who is best known for using data to guide on-field tactics like fourth down decisions, is bearish that it can be used in player evaluation.
Others seem to have little doubt that advanced analytics can provide help in picking players in the draft and, especially, using it to find efficiency in salary cap management. Dominitz’s work with the Eagles centered around trying to find productive players among a muck of similar-looking players in the middle rounds. Khan believes it can be used this way as well.
