Hey all, this is one of those nerdy baseball things I think some of you might enjoy. I made my own only-slightly-subjective statistic I call Game Rank, by which I rate how exciting a game is.
Factors considered include:
- Changes in win probability
- High leverage index
- Number of innings with win probability at 50%, especially later innings
- Walkoffs, come-from behind walkoffs, and come-from-behind wins (any inning, later innings weighted more)
- Pitching games scores
- Lead changes
- Defensive plays (low-probability AND highlight-worthy plays)
- Number of home runs
- Home team winning (since the excitement of the crowd plays into this)
- Headlines, historic moments, unique accomplishments by individual or team, etc (I told you it was subjective)
- Plus a few other bits and bobs
Anyways, I don’t have enough technical know-how to pull info automatically from any sources (if you can help me with that let me know! I use Fangraphs’ Win Probability and the game’s box score currently), so I just kinda figure it out and then only do one game per day. After all, I have a real job.
The point is to choose the best game from each day, which I list on my website alongside this “Game Rank” number, and link to it on MLB.tv. So (as long as your scores are turned off) you can visit my site and find great games to watch during the offseason or All Star break or if you work weird hours. You get to watch an old game as if it was live, but you already know it’s the best game of the day. I think it’s a cool idea, at least. LMK your thoughts on the statistic and my site: https://baseballrewatch.com/
I’ve been going at it since 2017, so you can find my take on the best game of the day from the start of the 2017 season up till now.
Cheers!
