Giants release OF Hammonds
DENVER - Struggling to recover from a broken thumb suffered in spring training, veteran outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds was released Friday by the San Francisco Giants.
Hammonds was batting just .211 with three homers and six RBIs in 40 games.
"I'm not one to use an excuse after 10-plus years," Hammonds said. "You just learn to keep your mouth shut and just do your best. My best wasn't good enough. It is what it is."
The 33-year-old Hammonds signed with the Giants last July after being released by the Milwaukee Brewers and batted .277 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 36 games.
But Hammonds broke his right thumb in spring training and never appeared comfortable at the plate this season.
A veteran of 11 seasons who also has played with Baltimore, Cincinnati and Colorado, Hammonds owns a .274 career average with 110 homers and 422 RBIs in 944 games.
The Giants also optioned infielder Brian Dallimore to Class AAA Fresno of the Pacific Coast League.
To replace Hammonds and Dallimore on the roster, the Giants recalled outfielder Todd Linden and purchased the contract of infielder Cody Ranson from Class AAA Fresno.
