Seattle gets pitcher off waivers

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners claimed right-hander Brett Evert off waivers from the Atlanta Braves on Friday and optioned him to Triple-A Tacoma.
Evert, 23, had a combined 5-3 record and 2.03 ERA in 29 games, including 14 starts, at Triple-A Richmond and Double-A Greenville this season. He had 92 strikeouts in 97 1-3 innings.
Evert was chosen in the seventh round of the 1999 June draft by Atlanta.
He is a native of Salem, Ore., and a 1999 graduate of North Salem High School.
