If you see that post going around claiming that tumblr’s new gif thing doesn’t credit the original poster, they are misinformed and are thinking wrong about this.

The gifs do have credit, it’s at the bottom of the gif. Ex.:

This guy is absolutely right. And if you ever run across a GIF that was credited incorrectly whenever it was originally posted on Tumblr, please have the copyright holder report that via this form.

  • You can do it from your dashboard. Click a blog’s name or avatar to open it up, then click the magnifying glass at the top of the blog. Now type. Type like you mean it. Get your results. Yum. 
  • You can filter and sort the results. Click the abacus-looking thing for all your favorite filters. New bonus filter: Limit your search to original posts.
  • It’s full text. And that goes for searches from the dashboard as well as those directly from a blog’s theme. Used to be we just searched tags. Now we peruse every word.

Pick the GIF you want and it slinks right in, properly credited and everything. Whoever originally posted the GIF will be notified accordingly. On their dashboard, on their phone, all the regular places notifications go.

Yesterday: GIFs are great! But actually making them kinda sucks.

Today: GIFs are great! And any video (or burst!) on your iOS device can be GIFFed, edited, and posted using the Tumblr app.

Here’s how:

  • Open a new photo post.
  • Pick a video (or a burst!). 
  • Poof. Now, it’s a GIF.

You can crop it. Zoom it. Trim it. Make it fast. Make it slow. Make it loop. Make it rebound back and forth. Make a whole bunch and arrange them into a photoset. See what other people are making over in the #made with tumblr search, then go have fun with this thing already.

Available on iOS right now, Android in just a little bit

And now, a few exciting tips:

  • Don’t underestimate bursts(!)—they produce extremely handsome GIFs. 
  • The shorter your GIF is, the better it’ll look. 
  • The rebound button is rad. Try it out and enjoy the resultant smoothness. 
  • Speaking of smoothness, 1.5x is a really smooth speed. 
  • GIF a slow-mo video, then speed it up in the GIF maker. An incredible, pudding-like smoothness. 
  • Too much face for one selfie? Make a photoset.

Once you’ve narrowed it down to a 3-second clip, you can pinch the screen to crop the GIF, drag the blue box underneath the GIF to shorten its duration, adjust the slider at the bottom of the screen to decide how fast you would like it to play, and tap the circular arrow to toggle between loop and rebound.

🌟 New

  • We’re working on making your follower count more accurate. Specifically, for those of you with less than 1,500 followers, the follower count no longer includes followers that were deleted or suspended. We had previously launched this for folks with less than 200 followers, then later for folks with less than 700 followers. With follower count not being a status symbol here (on [tumblr]) our goal is to make the count overall more accurate to accounts that would actually be able to see your posts in the Dashboard.

🛠 Fixed

  • [tumblr] was briefly down yesterday, so we sent one of our best developers on a coffee run for the tumbeasts. Once satisfied, they brought everything back online.
  • We fixed an issue that prevented posts in a community from being filtered based on the author’s blogname.
  • We fixed an issue that was preventing links from being added to text in the iOS app. Please keep your apps up to date!
