5/31 - When one team scores 21 runs in Arlington, Texas, you’d have to figure it was the Rangers – especially if the other choice is the Seattle Mariners, whose team batting average was .229 (before the game), almost 60 points lower than that of the Rangers.

But not only did the Mariners win 21-8, the game was not actually as close as the score suggests, as it was 16-0 in the top of the 3rd. Huh?

Only three MLB games are scheduled today, all night games. That’s extremely light. In fact, after opening day, it is the lightest scheduled date of the entire season. Huh?

In GuruGolf, the most widely owned golfer for The Memorial Tournament appears on roughly 23% of all a foursomes. By now, you can probably guess who it is. Huh? (John Huh, that is.)

5/30 - The Miami Marlins may have won 20 games this month. But the San Antonio Spurs have won 20 straight, including ten in the NBA playoffs. They haven’t lost since April 11th. It sounds to me like Gregg Popovich has been getting quite a bit of “nasty” out of the team.

6/27 - Albert Pujols went deep again last night, his 12th dinger of the season. While April’s .569 OPS seems a distant memory now, he still hasn’t fully regained form. This was only his 4th HR in June, and although he has a more “Pujolsian” ratio line of .388/.566/.944 this month, even that is still not up to his career averages. Nevertheless, the Angels have recovered nicely, only 4.5 games behind Texas, and already in position for a wild card slot. At the end of April, they were 7 games below .500 (8-15), and looking like a complete washout.

6/25 - Miss me?

Actually, I suspect most of you never even noticed I was away for the past 10 days. I’m back at RotoGuru World Headquarters for a short spell. This summer, I have a number of shorter trips planned, so blurbs will just be on again, off again for the next several months. I’m sure you can deal with it.

Interleague play has ended for the year. The A.L. went 142-110, slightly better than in each of the past two years. (The last time that the N.L. had the upper hand was in 2003.) Only three A.L. teams had losing records in 2012 interleague play (Cleveland, Seattle, and K.C), and they were each 8-10. Only five N.L. teams had winning records, headed by Arizona at 9-6. Colorado managed only two wins in 15 games.

Cliff Lee is still winless this year, in spite of a respectable ERA of 3.72 and a solid WHIP of 1.13. His W/L record is now 0-4, but in the 12 games that he started, the Phillies are 3-9. Like we all saw that coming.

In GuruGolf, Duffers#2 romped to a 5-stroke win (-56) in best ball for the Travelers Championship. Worst ball honors were shared by two teams (+48).

6/14 - Happy Flag Day!

Five no-hitters (incl. two perfect games) are already in the 2012 books, and it’s only mid-June. What’s up with that?

The U.S. Open is underway. The two favorites in GuruGolf are Zach Johnson and Padraig Harrington, each on about 20% of active foursomes. Tiger Woods appears on just over 6% of foursomes, twice as much as either of his two playing partners today.

6/13 - The U.S. Open tees off tomorrow morning. East coast GuruGolfers can finalize their foursomes tomorrow morning, as tournament doesn’t tee off until 10am ET.

For those who don’t regularly play GuruGolf, there are single-tournament prizes for just the U.S. Open, both in best ball and worst ball competition. This is true for each of the majors. So give it a try, and throw a few darts. You could score a sleeve of RotoGuru/GuruGolf logo golf balls!

6/11 - In spite of the “Natinals” sweep of the Red Sox, the A.L. maintained the upper hand in interleague play, now at 46-38. Nine of the 14 AL teams sport an interleague record of 4-2. The team with the best interleague record so far, however, is Arizona (6-0 vs. KC and Oak), and Colorado is the only winless team (vs. Seattle & Anaheim). Interleague play continues for the next two weeks.

6/7 - If Miami loses another close one in Boston tonight, I guess Miami fans can find solace in that they got “all they could ask for.” Or at least all LeBron was asking for.

Jeff Overton and Zach Johnson are the popular favorites in GuruGolf this week, each on about 25% of active foursomes. Interestingly enough, only six foursomes have both of them.

6/6 - The two NBA series certainly shifted gears. OKC and Boston each now get a chance to close out the series on their home court. A Boston-OKC NBA Finals would be a fun one – although I’m not yet ready to concede that as the outcome.

There’s a full slate of MLB games today, with all 15 games under the lights. If you are looking ahead, interleague play starts on Friday.

If you set your GuruGolf lineups early this week, you should recheck. Fourteen golfers have withdrawn since Sunday, and as of this morning, 148 GuruGolf teams still have at least one inactive golfer for The FedEx St. Jude Classic. This is also the final week in the Spring to the Open Contest. While the outcomes are still up for grabs, I see that the same manager is currently leading in both the best and worst ball formats.

6/4 - Both NBA series have morphed into best 2-of-3, and while the home teams still seem to have the upper hand (as the home teams have won all 8 games of the conference championship series), it’s looking like one away-team breakthrough is all that’s needed to turn the tide in either series. With both series knotted at two, the one thing we do know for sure is that we’ll have playoff action for each of the next four nights.

Congrats to JAYDENS POPPY, whose -46 was the top best ball score (by 3 strokes) in GuruGolf for the weekend. International Chip-Chirps topped the worst ball scoring with +63.
