A Look at the Moon Through a Supertelephoto

Grabbed the 400mm tonight to grab a few shots of the moon. I also wanted to see what the image quality would be with the crappy Tamron 2x teleconverter. Here are a couple of the shots:

New Cool Gimmick for On-Screen Galleries...

In browsing the web recently, I stumbled across this new Flash-based GUI for viewing images. It's sorta cool, actually. I'm always looking for cool designs for web sites, and I'm going to completely redesign my photography site early next year. But I had to share this one. Click the image below to view my Flickr photos in Tilt Viewer.

Autumn Porthole, Nisqually Wildlife Refuge, Revisited...

Last year, I took the family for a walk through the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge to shoot some pictures of the autumn leaves. Last Friday, I took my son back through, since he had the day off from school and it was my time to stay home with him. I remembered a certain tree near the entrance of the path that I shot last year, and I wanted to see what the foliage looked like this year. Here's the shot from last year:

Of course, I post-processed that image rather heavily -- too heavily for my tastes now. So, I wanted to shoot it again this year. Here's a couple of shots of that tree as it stands this year:

Hmm, looking at the picture from last year, which was taken about two weeks later than the pictures I took this year, I'm not as convinced the leaves have turned later this year at all. Interestingly, too, the blackberry brambles seem to really be taking over this tree. I shot these bottom ones with my 55-200 VR lens attached to my D1H (the D2H was occupied with the 400mm f/3.5). I'm still amazed that camera works as well as it does.

Windy!

Real windy out here. I believe our building is currently running on generator power, as I've heard from others calling into my coworkers that say the power's out all over the neighborhood.

Here's one quick snap I took looking out the window at the trees:

Yikes!

Testing the Tokina 300mm F/2.8 AT-X SD

Finally got a chance to put the Tokina 300mm through some tests outside. Fortunately my puppy was a willing subject. What an awesome lens! Between the two of these superteles, I can hardly wait for baseball season -- the 2008 season -- to begin...
