Takuro Ishii Hits 2,000th
Yokohama's 18 year veteran shortstop, Takuro Ishii, hit is 2,000th career base hit last night (May 11, 2006) against the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in his first at bat to lead off the bottom of the first. The ball was a sharply hit come-backer to pitcher Aikyoh, going through the pitcher's legs, past second base, and into center field.

Ishii becomes the 18th 34th player to have 2,000 hits in his NPB career. He's also the 4th player to have hit 2,000 who has taken the mound at the ichi-gun level. The others were:
  • Tetsuharu Kawakami - 1938-41, 39 games, 11 wins, 9 losses, 200 innings, 58 ER, 2.61 ERA - pitched and played first base until 1941, converted full time to first base in 1942

  • Isao Shibata - 1962, 6 games, 0 wins, 2 losses, 11 innings, 12 ER, 9.82 ERA - converted to outfielder in 1963

  • Yoshinori Hirose - 1970, 1 game, 0 wins, 0 losses, 2 innings, 0 ER, 0.00 ERA - utility player between 1956-64, mostly full time outfielder from 1965-77 with 1 mound appearance in 1970, catcher is the only position not played

  • Takuro Ishii - 1989-91, 28 games, 1 win, 4 losses, 49 innings, 31 ER, 5.69 ERA - pitcher between 1989-91, converted to left side infielder in 1992 (mainly third, occasionally short), full time shortstop since 1996
Congratulations Ishii for making the Meikyukai.

Congrats to Ishii, and definitely a bright spot for the BayStars this season. But where did you get the number 18? This Nikkan Sports article (in Japanese) states he became #34 to collect 2,000 in NPB. Did you mix the 18 up with his 18 seasons?

You're right, that was 18 seasons to become the 34th player to reach 2,000 hits. Thanks for the correction.
