About DigCCurr II : Extending an International Digital Curation Curriculum to Doctoral Students and Practitioners

DigCCurr II seeks to develop an international, doctoral-level curriculum and educational network in the management and preservation of digital materials across their life cycle. If cultural heritage, science, commerce, health, education, and government sectors are to have long-term access and re-use of meaningful and authentic digital resources, graduate education programs must produce PhD-level faculty in digital curation. This project will prepare future faculty to perform research and teach in this area, as well as provide summer institutes for cultural heritage information professionals already working in this arena.

The School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) was awarded a 2008 Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program Grant from IMLS, under the category "Programs to Build Institutional Capacity." DigCCurr II: Extending an International Digital Curation Curriculum to Doctoral Students and Practitioners" (2008-2012) builds upon DigCCurr I (2006-09). SILS continues in their partnership with NARA, as well as introducing a new partnership, the University of Toronto's Faculty of Information.


The Carolina Digital Curation Doctoral Fellowship Program (CDCDF) top

  • A 20 hr/wk position as a Research Fellow for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)-funded project, “DigCCurr II: Extending an International Digital Curation Curriculum to Doctoral Students and Practitioners.”
  • A stipend of $19,000 for two years
  • In-state tuition and health coverage
  • Extensive opportunities to meet key leaders in the Digital Curation research and practice arenas through workshops and symposia to be held at UNC

Digital curation curriculum development for PhD students top

Digital curation curriculum development for PhD students will be an extension of the curriculum developed in the DigCCurr I grant project. This project will enhance the framework, extend the content, seek new delivery streams, and integrate the theory, practice, and world-wide expertise for those seeking to build academic careers.

Professional Institutes top

DigCCurr II sponsors Professional Institutes aimed at assisting digital collection managers in developing their digital curation strategies.

The first Professional Institute, "Curation Practices for the Digital Object Lifecycle" was held June 21-26, 2009, with a follow-up session January 6-7, 2010 in Chapel Hill, NC.

The second Professional Institute was held May 16-21 2010. The follow-up Winter Institute and Public Symposium were held January 5-7, 2011.

The third Professional Institute was held May 15-20, 2011. The follow-up Winter Institute and Public Symposium will be held January 4-6, 2012.

A Professional Institute is planned for May 20-25, 2012.

The Digital Curation Exchange (DCE) top

The Digital Curation Exchange website has been developed in response to a growing demand for a central location for digital curation professionals, educators, and students to discuss "all things digital curation." This site will provide space to post and discuss curriculum, presentations, publications, reports, syllabi, video, and more. The DCE site is intended to serve as a growing and evolving platform to support the emerging digital curation profession. It was launched at the DigCCurr 2009 conference and can be accessed at www.digitalcurationexchange.org.

Digital Curation Symposia top

DigCCurr II hosts a series of Public Symposia and PhD Symposia to showcase the cutting edge work that is occurring in the digital curation arena. The first Public Symposium took place on January 8, 2010, immediately following the second session of the first Professional Institute. The next Public symposium was held January 7, 2011. The third will be held January 6, 2012.
